Bridge humbucker with fat highs?

I'm looking for a pickup that sounds sweet on the upper part of the fretboard and that has a big bottom end. Similar to a dimarzio breed. I also wonder if a bridge blackout will give me this sound in my all mahogany ESP EC-1000

From what I've heard the Alternate 8 is what you want in a nutshell but this is what I've heard not what I've experienced. I've never used the Alternate 8.

I'll check out some sound clips cuz I was kinda looking at the custom 5 but now that input gives me some options.

But one question I really want answered is does the blackout bridge + mahogany body set mahogany neck and ebony fb= thick ballsy high output Les Paul tone?

Re: Bridge humbucker with fat highs?

^ almost but an EC-1000 will never sound just like a Les Paul cuz of the 24 frets and thinner body.

you'll be pretty damn close tho.

No experience with it, but seems like a Tone Zone might give you what you're after.

Agreed, you'll get close. It will be LPish, but of course never sound exactly like an LP. Blackouts + that body type should be very full and big sounding and you'll have more output than you need. The highs in Blackouts seem very smooth and cut through the mix well. I like thm. For fat highs a Custom Custom would work too. I'd shy away from the Custom 5 if you want fat highs. I'd say you'll get just the opposite.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes I know that my EC-1000 won't sound just like a les paul but I am aiming for that kinda thick sound and I'm gonna sell my dean dc6 to get money for the blackouts and then sell the EMGs in my EC-1000 and my hellraiser to buy(thanks to yall's suggestions) either an alt8/59 combo or a custom custom/59 combo. Whatever yall think would work better.

Alt 8. Bottom end somewhat similar to a SH6 distortion but with fatter, lusher highs.

+1, I love the Custom 5 for rhythm but the highs are slightly on the shrill side probably not what you're looking for

The blackouts will be pretty sweet in your EC, much thicker than EMGs, better harmonics, very difficult to get cleans out of them imo. Are you putting the alt8 or custom custom/59 combo in your hellraiser? I'd go with custom custom that way you're just a magnet change away from 3 other humbucker models.

I'm definitely leaning towards the custom custom/59 combo 4 my hellraiser n blackouts 4 my EC-1000. I think both guitars are gonna sound amazing especially the hellraiser it's emgs didn't do it justice at all.

Re: Bridge humbucker with fat highs?

Good plan, I've got a similar but slightly cheaper setup, ltd viper with emgs for downtuned metal, schecter c1+ with duncans for everything else. Be sure and update us when you get everything installed.

FYI- If I were you, don't waste any time with the duncan pots/jack, just plug the blackouts into the existing quick connect cables in your ec and be done with it in a few minutes.

Re: Bridge humbucker with fat highs?

If you're open to swaps you should try a JB A2 if you want fat highs, best lead sound I've heard out of a pickup.

Re: Bridge humbucker with fat highs?

The 24 frets will only effect the neck pickup since it is closer to the bridge where as the bridge pickups position is the same.

As for the C5 Id stay away from it if you want a fatter sound. Since your guitar is thinner it is naturally a little brighter and the C5 is really bright and lacks mids big time. You need a pickup with big lows and full mids which the C5 doesnt have. If you like the Custom line maybe the C5 is the ticket since it has a lot of mids, buttery highs, and even tho it doesnt have a lot of bottom end it does have that spongier bottom end response from the A2 magnet in it. Since you have an ebony board Id say the CC and its pulled back highs would work out nice. If anything you could slap a 300k or 250k volume pot in there for the bridge which will darken it up more. If you like your C5 Les Paul the CC would probably get you what you are wanting.

Yeah i'll let u guys know how it turns out but it might he a little bit because Ill have to some selling/trading in order to get the pups and hopefully I'll have profited from selling my emgs because I know duncans are cheaper(unless the store tries to cheat me!)

thanks everybody

Re: Bridge humbucker with fat highs?

Definitely NOT Custom 5. You won't get fatness out of that pup. Possibly C8 or Pearly Gates could be the ticket.

I thought CC when I saw fat highs but it's got no bass. I would say the C8 might be a good choice for fat highs AND decent bass.

Re: Bridge humbucker with fat highs?

try switching the emg 85 to the bridge of your ec1000 first. emg 85 is a big thick metal monster of a bridge pup
