bridge pup for the only guitarist in a band

nuntius

Boogeyman of Tone
ok heres the deal.

im the only guitarist and my favourite guitar is my gordon smith. its a poplar bolt on strat with the standard maple neck rosewood fretboard stuff and two humbuckers

im happy with the neck bucker but the bridge always seems a bit narrow, dunno if thats the right word but it doesnt fill out the space i need it to, unlike my RS 530 does (it has more bass as well)

i love the lead tone it has and to my knowledge it has an alnico 5 mag

basically what i want is something tonally in the same ballpark but not so conpressed sounding and much fuller

the music i play is prog kinda rock biased towards the heavier side of things, but we do have some clean songs so i want a decent clean tone out of it too

any suggestions/

If your amp has enough gain, the 59 or the PG would be a good choice for an open, full sound with good cleans. The Screaming Demon is cool too.

being the only guitarist you probably want a bigger tone to make up for the lack of a second guitarist? well ,a very slight chorus effect or slight Detune from a pitch shifter on helps with that
and a mid heavy, big bass pup
:)
try a air zone with that effect on for a huge tone from one guitarist

Y'know, my experience has been pretty much the exact opposite.

I had a similar problem where I was having a hard time being heard and I finally realized that my desire for a "thick, fat, bassy, crunch" tone was the problem. My sound was occupying some of the same tonal range that the bass player was in. The more I tried to fatten it up, the more I got lost. The solution to my problem was to introduce some more mids with my 'bucker. And the best solution I've found actually is to dump the 'bucker altogether and use single coils. The neck single coil has a great, fat, warm tone but is still different enough tonally to cut right through the mix.
