Bros, I need major advice and I have no idea where to begin

Alright guys, this is gonna be a long one. I need some major tonal/rig advice. I don't really know where to start explaining, so I'll pick a random spot and begin:

For the last 6 years that I've been playing guitar, I had primarily been using a Fender Stage 112SE 1x12 S.S. combo. I still own this amp and it has a certain character to its tone that I love. In those 6 years, I've been through a Randall 2x12 combo, Mesa Rocket 440 4x10 combo, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, and now I currently own a Laney AOR50II tube head. I think I should provide info on how I felt about each amp, as guidance to help in giving advice:

Fender Stage 112SE: Awesome S.S. amp. Great cleans (not nearly as great as the Hot Rod, though), and a really smooth, full distortion. This thing's distortion can get heavy (which I need), but lacks the natural harmonics of a screaming, cranked tube amp. Even though this amp is not perfect, I will always hang onto it as at least a backup amp.

Randall RG100SC 2x12 combo: This actually sounded pretty decent, but a bit too scooped, and turning up the mids just turned the tone to crap. The bottom end was also muddy, and overall, the amp just sounded synthetic.

Mesa Rocket 440 4x10 (EL84) combo: Thin, brittle, weak. This could do a bluesy distortion at heaviest and was just a big mistake. I ended up buying and selling this amp twice (at a big loss). Big mistake.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (1x12, 6L6): Absolutely amazing clean tones, crap distortion. I found the distortion weak, farty, and grainy. It was thick, but only useful for certain leads, and turned to mud for rhythm. I tried to add crunch by turning up the presence, but that just added an awful, harsh sound. I tried going the distortion pedal route with many different pedals, and found somewhat of a useful tone with the Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion, but I got tired of using pedals, and I thought, "If I'm gonna have a 'good' amp, it damn well better be able to give me solid distortion on its own".

Laney AOR50II (EL34): I got this just a week ago, so I'm still experimenting with it. This is my first EL34-based amp. I like it a lot, but sometimes I just don't know... It is really crunchy and has beautiful, full mids, but sometimes it can sound grainy and farty, just like my HRD did. I thought it might need better tubes, but it has JJs, which everyone seems to recommend. I really don't know what to think of this amp yet.

Another thing is that the Laney really brings the character out of my guitars, which can be bad. For really the first time, I'm starting to learn which of my guitars sound good, and which truly sound awful. My Oscar Schmidt hollowbody (cheap Gibson knockoff), which I thought had an incredible, warm tone though my Stage 112SE, sounds horrible now! And with my Jackson, I'm starting to learn why people hate the Gibson pickups I have in it now! The Squier Strat obviously sounds like crap. My only satisfactory-toned guitar now is my Delonge Strat w/ the SD Invader. I recently ordered a pickguard loaded with 2 EMG 89s, which I'm sure will sound awesome.

I guess what I really need is amp advice. Should I try making my guitars sound better, or get an amp that isn't so transparent? It kind of sounds like a stupid question, but I mean, I have a friend with a crappy, stock Ibanez GAX70 and it (as well as other cheap guitars) sound great through his 5150 2x12 combo. I REALLY want a 5150II, but I keep thinking "Ahh, that's SO much money to spend". I have the money to do it, but I just don't know. Oh yeah, also... maybe something worth noting is that my cab (w/ Celestion G12T-100s) sounds bad (fuzzy and gritty) when I am standing in front of the speakers, but when I angle to the side, it sounds MUCH better and smoother. Why is this?

Well, I am tired of typing (and you're probably tired of reading), so any advice is more than welcome and I'll answer any tonal questions as they come.

Re: Bros, I need major advice and I have no idea where to begin

Ah, the age old question: "Which part of my rig should I upgrade first, guitar or amp?" :) My general answer to that is "whichever bugs you more". The one thing I will tell you is that I don't recommend getting an amp that is "less transparent". I've owned a couple of those and IMO they get really frustrating because you've taken the guitar out of the equation in getting your tone.

Another general suggestion I'll make is to think about consolidating your amps. Instead of having several amps that you're kinda sorta happy with, sell 'em and get one amp that really works for you.

You might also check out the Laney with a different cab to see if it doesn't fart out with different speakers.

Best of luck in your quest for tone! :)

I would have to say that I would work on the amp portion of your problem. Finding an amp that sounds the way you want it to will make all the rest much eaiser. You can always change the tone of your guitars with pup changes, string gague and material changes, ect. But through a crappy amp you won't really be able to tell.

That Laney head should be a pretty decent amp to say the least. I'd spend some time trying different speaker configs and tube configs. Try some of the Eminence line of speakers....at about $50 each they're at least affordable to experiment with, and I think they sound great. Also, try swapping pre-amp tubes. Get a couple of NOS tubes, spend $30 each on a couple. Get some of the new GT-M's, and some JJ's and Chinese. GT's are about $20, but JJ's and others can be had for $10...again, cheap ways to really effect tone.

A transparent amp that allow's your playing style along with the voice of each individual guitar come through is a godsend.

A great amp will make a bad guitar sound good.

A crap amp will make a great guitar sound like crap.

My suggestion is to find an amp that you're atleast 80% happy with, then start upgrading/replacing your guitars to better suit the amp and your playing style. New pickups will do a world of good.

If I may put my .02 in, amp resolution is not what everyone is lookin for. Some people prefer a euphonic sounding amp, ie, one that colours the sound, but in a way that they find pleasant. Someone else may find it too coloured, but if you're happy with it, that's all that matters.

As for trading in your amps and getting one amp that you're in love with, I think that this is sound advice. Remember: No one amp is going to make all of your guitars sound great. That's why you get multiple guitars, because they all sound different. Otherwise you would pull an Yngwie or Zakk and get 12 identical guitars ...

As for amp suggestions, just start playing everything within 200 miles of your house. Check Ebay, too; there may be someone local to you trying to unload your perfect rig!! Don't buy something sight-unseen, you've had too much bad luck, imo, and now you need to really try out your guitars in a variety of amps. Don't be afraid to check out other models of Mesa, Fender, etc, even if it only reinforces what you don't like about them.

Being able to articulate what you like and don't like about an amp will go a long way in letting a good salesperson guide you in your decision.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

PS --> Stay away from SS amps! :laugh2:

Re: Bros, I need major advice and I have no idea where to begin

i think you should do something about your guitars first. laney makes awesome amps, and i'm sure with a little more time than one week, you'll have the thing figured out. but good tone begins at the guitar. and if there's one thing i've noticed about tube amps vs. ss amps, it's that tube amps are waaaay more responsive to things like different woods/pickups/whatever on a guitar. a good idea would be to get your hands on some type of guitar that you don't own (maybe borrow one from a friend or something) and play it through your amp for a day or two.

we've all been down this road, hope it all works out for you man.

Try getting used to the Laney. You might hear things differently in a couple of weeks of playing it.

Re: Bros, I need major advice and I have no idea where to begin

with the 89s, your on your way heh -

try other peoples guitars, and different leads as well - ditching my cheapy 15m lead and using a 1m ernie ball lead gave me a really different sound

Re: Bros, I need major advice and I have no idea where to begin

Saggy, I'd play around with some different EL-34 tubes (JJ's, Svetlana, and EH EL-34). Also, try some closed back 2X12's and 4X12's with it (is your Laney an open back 12" ?). I like Vintage 30's or G12H-30's Celestions myself. Laney makes some good tube stuff. Also, use Seymour Duncan pups in your different guitars through it. Play with it for a month and see if you can zoom in onto cool tones.

Re: Bros, I need major advice and I have no idea where to begin

i think that you need to investigate the guitar element of the equation a bit more ... borrow friends' guitars ... if you told us that an unimpeachably good guitar sounded unfulfilling, i'd say that you need to explore the amp situation some more, but it doesnt read as if you've really played a whole bunch of quality axes through your amp ... i hope the EMGs get you where you want to be

good luck
