Well, yesterday I brought home the Triple Rec Reborn I posted about a couple weeks or so ago, and grabbed another used Mesa Rectifier 2x12 in the meantime. And today was the first chance I had to wring it out
First impressions in comparison to how I remember my old 3 channel Triple Rec:
The clean channel is better than I remember my old one being. More sparkly, clear, ect.
Channel 2 is the one I'm most impressed with. It's actually got some mids to it. Not as much gain as channel 2 in my old one, but it's capable of being more than a fizzy buzz box on this channel.
Channel 3 is pretty much the same as I remember my old one being. Fizzy, scoopy, not all that great mids, ect. But that's fine, because I did miss playing my old one along with my Splawn or Marshall. A scoopy amp and a mid heavy amp sound splendid together.
Oh, and all three channels are capable of much more bass than any guitarist will ever need, so that part hasn't changed. And I'm definitely going to end up putting EL-34s in it. I'm not a fan of the squashed sound that distorting 6L6s make. And yes, switching to 50 watt mode does make it alot easier to get the poweramp to distort.
Now about the new to me 2x12 (the new one has wheels, the old one doesn't). Holy **** is that thing bright!!! I suppose it's V30s aren't as broken in as the ones in the other. I got them both used. The "old" one was kind of the ***** cab in the previous owner's basement for several years, so it got rode hard. The other one, though, I have no idea about its history. I ordered it used from a Guitar Center in NJ. They both have the real deal old Brit V30s from back when all V30s were made the UK, and both cabs are early '00s. But I guess it shows how much difference break-in and even slight variances in speaker construction can make. But I'm planning on robbing the 8 ohm V30s out of my Recto 4x12 to make these 16 ohm cabs, and these V30s are probably going into the old naked and empty JCM800 4x12 I also picked up over the weekend (on the right in the pic), so the point is moot anyway.
New 2x12 is on the left.
