Brought home the Triple Rec Reborn and picked up a couple cabs too.

Well, yesterday I brought home the Triple Rec Reborn I posted about a couple weeks or so ago, and grabbed another used Mesa Rectifier 2x12 in the meantime. And today was the first chance I had to wring it out

First impressions in comparison to how I remember my old 3 channel Triple Rec:

The clean channel is better than I remember my old one being. More sparkly, clear, ect.

Channel 2 is the one I'm most impressed with. It's actually got some mids to it. Not as much gain as channel 2 in my old one, but it's capable of being more than a fizzy buzz box on this channel.

Channel 3 is pretty much the same as I remember my old one being. Fizzy, scoopy, not all that great mids, ect. But that's fine, because I did miss playing my old one along with my Splawn or Marshall. A scoopy amp and a mid heavy amp sound splendid together.

Oh, and all three channels are capable of much more bass than any guitarist will ever need, so that part hasn't changed. And I'm definitely going to end up putting EL-34s in it. I'm not a fan of the squashed sound that distorting 6L6s make. And yes, switching to 50 watt mode does make it alot easier to get the poweramp to distort.

Now about the new to me 2x12 (the new one has wheels, the old one doesn't). Holy **** is that thing bright!!! I suppose it's V30s aren't as broken in as the ones in the other. I got them both used. The "old" one was kind of the ***** cab in the previous owner's basement for several years, so it got rode hard. The other one, though, I have no idea about its history. I ordered it used from a Guitar Center in NJ. They both have the real deal old Brit V30s from back when all V30s were made the UK, and both cabs are early '00s. But I guess it shows how much difference break-in and even slight variances in speaker construction can make. But I'm planning on robbing the 8 ohm V30s out of my Recto 4x12 to make these 16 ohm cabs, and these V30s are probably going into the old naked and empty JCM800 4x12 I also picked up over the weekend (on the right in the pic), so the point is moot anyway.

New 2x12 is on the left.

Congrats man! I have a dual reborn (bought around xmas). While they say both channels are identical, there's definitely a difference between the two of them for me. Ch2 is sounds a bit thicker to my ears and is where I spend most of my time.

Enjoy the amp and the cab!

Munny, munny, munny, munny ... munny.

Nice!

Re: Brought home the Triple Rec Reborn and picked up a couple cabs too.

Have you compared the two cabs with both sitting directly on the floor? On wheels they are a bit brighter and less thick-toned.

Also the grill-cloths are tighter-woven on the older versions which will shave-off a sliver of high-end.
Looking at both my older recto cabs it's hard to even see the speakers through the weave.
On my newer 412 you can very easily see the speakers from any distance.

Yes, castors make a cab sound brighter and thinner. I always remove the castors from my 4x12 cab after moving it. The same applies to amp stands. The cab itself, or at least part of it, needs to be in direct contact with the floor, or if stacked, in direct contact with the cab under, it that is also in direct contact with the floor, for better tone. FWIW, Eric Johnson places his cabs in direct contact on wooden blocks that are in contact with the stage floor.

Thanks, everybody!

I've read that thing about wheels before, and no, I haven't tried it yet. But I doubt that the wheels are making that much difference. Also I haven't dated the "new" one yet, but both have UK V30s that do not have a Mesa label. But even if the grille cloth is different and given the whole wheel thing, I doubt it's making the difference I heard. The difference is drastic. Basically the difference between the top end of an Eminence Texas Heat and a Celestion G12T-75. Blunt instrument vs ice pick. The new to me cab made my Splawn sound scooped.

It's everything combined,,,,the broken-in speakers, wheels, even cloth a bit.
Mesa even used to advertise that their tite-weaves filtered more high-end than others. (they were also dipped in something too, maybe the new ones are also.?
Trust us though, wheels on/off makes a big change across the whole spectrum, especially when they're 4".

Having one off the ground and one on the ground together probably sounds best. Different resonant peaks and all.
I have a pair of 212s that I prefer with one on the ground horizontal and the other stood vertical. (both have large feet on one side as well as the bottoms)
One is the huuuge avatar212 w/k100 and the other is an older (with no wheels) mesa recto212.
Usually it's the Avatar tipped vertical since it's plenty wide enough on it's side for the head's rubber feet. (except tremoverb)
It sound's great the other way also, just depends on what I'm running and what it needs more/less of.

Actually with the mesa212 on it's side the recto head's feet straddle the top with about an inch to spare each side, so you just a throw medium-size folded towel across the top then sit the head down and it basically locks it on, plus it's a good vibration-barrier.

Congrats on Triple multi-watt. It's my favorite amp ever that I've owned. (that's out of 6 lol, maybe 8 if you count solid-state/valve-state)
It's easily the most versatile out of my four rectos, across a wide range of music-styles and within a more narrowed-down tone-palette.
Maybe,,,,,,,,, easier to "perfectly" fine-tune is the way to put it, which is what many seem to call opposite of "plug-and-play".

Overall I think Orange is my favorite channel throughout the gain modes, and for modern-mode it's about a 50/50 toss-up for me.
With some guitars/boosts/cabs I prefer red, and with others it's orange,,,,,,,or maybe I just have red/orange-channel days.
I do swear my ears/preferences are just different from day to day,,,,,even if I was theoretically trying to achieve the exact same tone.

In modern-mode I seem to hear red as more compressed to the mids(although maybe there is a big notch somewhere specific.?), and orange as much more open and wide.(spread lol) Depends on all those rear toggle settings to a degree.

Definitely my favorite recto-cleans and pushed-cleans.
Can do sparkly, bubbly,,,,,,,has some purring warmth in pushed with the treble down, like a tremoverb w/420 coke-bottles.

Ok. These cabs are going to live most of their life stood up on their side in a stereo rig for my Helix. So I'll try them that way before I do any speaker swapping. Those wheels need to go anyway, they're just some cheapos from a hardware store that don't detach.

Hehe, yeah. This is what it looks like in the basement. And yes, that's the same Splawn, Recto, and naked Marshall cab that I had upstairs the other day.

Re: Brought home the Triple Rec Reborn and picked up a couple cabs too.

Wow... awesome multiple set ups. I wish I had a basement to have all my gear set up and ready to play. My eldest son is just looking for a house with his girl, so whilst it won't be a basement where I can really rock out, I may well have a more modest man cave when he moves out.

Re: Brought home the Triple Rec Reborn and picked up a couple cabs too.

Wow nice basement,,,,,,great thing about a basement is how loud you can go without much getting out to the world.

I imagine that basements aren't as common over there. Here in the Midwest, they're fairly common, since they come in handy for hiding from tornadoes. Or maybe it's a cultural thing, I don't know.

Yeah, except for anybody upstairs. Lol.

Then again, my drummer has practice for his band in his basement, and plenty of the neighbors can hear it. It's kinda funny too, he'll get a compliment one in awhile because they sounded good. Lol

And thanks again, everybody!

Re: Brought home the Triple Rec Reborn and picked up a couple cabs too.

Wheels off couples the cab to the stage better and results in more bass.

Wheels on reduces the bass some.

Which results in the feeling that there is more treble, but I doubt that wheels on actually increases the treble.

Reborns are killer amps. I had a dual and it was great.
