Building a Trainwreck Express

Re: Building a Trainwreck Express

Lew, no doubt about it. Nothing wrong with having a goal however. :). Knopfler could probably squeeze that tone out of a lot of amps.

Re: Building a Trainwreck Express

I think people are missing my points...

-Mark didn't use an Express he played a Komet

Those are 2 different amps, designed by the same guy yes but still different amp and if you've ever heard both an Express and a Komet in person you'll know how truly different they are.

To me getting a homebrew Express to capture Komet tones is like getting a Music Man HD130 to capture Twin Reverb Tones...both amps are 100 watts, both are 2x12 combos, both were designed by Leo Fender and thats where it ends for the most part...

Also, this...

-Despite all the different schmatics fn Trainwrecks amps on the internet and all the guys out there building clones many, maybe even most of those schematics are not complete or correct...

I heard an Express made from an internet schematic once...the builder even claimed to know the name of the amp the schematic was taken from, spent big bucks on one off custom trannys, killer parts...all the bells and whistles...the amp sounded like total poo.

I was just saying best of luck with the project...not sure how much (if any) Komet tone you'll get plus just a warning about Wreck amps in general but mostly just good luck...

Re: Building a Trainwreck Express

No worries. It's a self-admitted crap shoot. If it doesn't sound good, no one will ever hear it but me. U might muss one mark completely but hit an entirely different one. Time is on my side.

Re: Building a Trainwreck Express

I'd love to have a Komet. Saw the Mark Knopfler Emmylou Harris DVD a while back and I've been thinking about that amp ever since. Every once in a while I hear something that just sounds like the tone I sing to myself inside my head.

That said, like all great players who have created their own tone and not copied others so much, Mark Knopfler's tone comes from being Mark Knopfler.

So right about him. He is a true great player. The Komet has changed in some ways the way that I play. Many people think of them as a gain monster & IMHo they are not very high gain amps. Just very loud, but very toneful. I use my hands a lot more then I did with my other amps. The volume control on the guitar plays a big part of how clean or dirty it can be. I leave mine in the gradual setting and use a TS808 clone to push it more. Works well for me.

Hey Scott,

Just curious - due to I'm currently on layouting a halfpower Rocket build

cheers

I have a feeling that this will be an awesome addition to your already awesome stable of Celtic Amps.

Re: Building a Trainwreck Express

I'm trying to capture some of that Mark Knopfler Komet tone he has on several albums, namely Shangrila. If this one turns out well, Stratman is going to have a seriously hard time waiting for the 2nd one. :)

That's cool Scott....I've read where folks try copying Ken's original amp ideas, but they fall short..I guess people miss whatever secret mojo Ken built into his amps...

Hope your amp is awe inspiring though Scott....I've heard only alot of YouTube samples of Trainwreck amps and they are amazing sounding amps! Ken told me years ago that Bryan Adam's lead player used a Trainwreck amp in the song 'It's Only Love" with Tina Turner..The lead tones in that song are really awesome.
