But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

Remember kids, if you pay extra for chambering, like on a Historic Chambered Resissue or a Cloud 9, it's a good thing. Makes the guitar lighter and more resonant. More "alive" and "airy" and "woody" or whatever.

But if they start building it into the Standards and Studios, it's a worst-case scenario of tonesuck.

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

And I still don't want either, although for somewhat different reasons than the OP (I seem to recall lots of strats & LPs in the 80's).

I've owned 2 american standard strats (SSS & HSS delux), and, while I'm probably more of a strat type guy than LP, both never did it for me. Did play a friend's mexican strat once, and I hate to say it but it played and sounded better than my american standards...lol.

And I've played LPs; way to thick sounding and clunky feeling for me. Got a nice LP & two strats sitting in my music room now from my son's band. Whenever I pick them up they go right back down and I go back to the parker or reverend. Why? Because of how the parker and reverend feel, how my response to them takes my playing to a higher level, and how they sound different from what eveyone else is playing.

Like song writing, I have no desire to sound exactly like something else that's been done many times before. Of course, like most of us, I do hear something I like and want to know how to get their sound. For me, I do that so that I can make my setup get close to it but still get something unique in the end. And because I don't own anything standard (guitar or amps) I'll probably never get a truly standard sound, and I'm ok with that.

No disrespect at all to strats, LPs, or trying to replicate standard/classic sounds. We're all free to go after what pleases us and find what gives us that sweet feeling that keeps us from putting our axes down, which is really all that matters, right? :)

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

It may just be that simple fact that when I was a kid Gibson and Fender just weren't very cool at all, and they were not making great instruments (they got better) and what you learn as a kid stays with you.

Yeah, growing up when I did, SG's and Strats were the cool, modern designs. Being an old man now, the pointy guitars that came after them seem to scream out: "Teenager who wants to annoy grow ups."

In my younger days, I used to think that whammy bars were essential for any self-respecting guitar. But as my playing has developed, they don't fit my style. I have a couple guitars with maestros and a bigsby, but the hand bars are folded up out of the way and rarely ever used.

The semi and full hollow bodies that I thought were boxy 'old man guitars', I have since grown to love. I guess when you hit a certain age, you worry less about projecting a rebellious image with your instrument, and become more concerned about tone quality.

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

as much as i love LP's, SG's, Teles, Strats, Superstrats... the one axe i've taken to every gig i've done in the last 10 years is my 2001 Godin Solidac... it's discontinued now but i want it's replacement, the Godin SAXT... it's basicly a cheaper LGXT... the Solidac is a mash up of various guitar shapes...

but i do have to say the local shop has a used 1987 "USA" Kramer in stock... just like the one i wanted as a teenager... it's simular looking to the junk Striker 3000 i owned in 1987.... only reason i didn't grab it is the cost factor! i need my cash for the summer fun and vaction i'm planning...

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

I have a 2006 USA made, 60th commemorative anniversary Fender Strat, which has 57/62 vintage pups and the Cubic Zirconia in the headstock, but ever since I bought my ESP LTD M-15 4 months ago, I just cannot put that goddamm thing down. For some reason, I am now totally hooked on ESP's and am now considering selling my Strat so I can get some more ESP's to add to my collection.

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

First: To the OP, (someone else said it too) If you want pointy and a classic brand= Explorer!!

Second: My banter on the topic. Ive said it before.. Tho my older bro had Bad Co and Uriah heep going and I was a kiss fan from diapers... I didnt really become a music fiend till my teens and hair metal was my thing.. I LOVED/still love the Kramers and all the shredsticks.. For years, I was very anti anything with a pickguard. (except the transparent ones on the RG 770s) I thought LPs and Strats were old school.. I still love the kramers and such. I think mainly cuz it takes me back to those days...>>>>>> que up dreamy time/flashback music<<<<<< I even went as far as to scoff as some of the bands that still used the LPs and such.. (faster pussycat etc)
But, as I got more into playing and the guitar itself, I realized there really is a tonal dif. I liked the contrast Cinderella had with Jeff playing Kramers and doing the stunt work and Tom coming in with those big chewy riffs.. I now love the LP/ marshall (or Splawn) connection .
Also see the tonal benes of strats and teles too. Strat necks and bridge singles just arent my favs. So, its all good and all a matter of preference and what inspires you

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

I have no interest in buying a Gibson or a Fender American made. Not that they don't make good guitars. But I believe over the years they have rested on their Loral's. To me they are over priced there is a more competitive market now. There are other manufactures out there producing some well made guitars for less money. Now as time is moving forward there will be even more demand for quality made axes at an affordable price IMO.

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

ive owned gibson LP, fender american standard strat, gibson SG,and a MIJ kramer focus 1000 when i had barely been playing 5 years..In the future id like to own an LP,fender strat or a kramer but thats really more to have, than to play. My main guitar is my dk-2 and i play very bluesy stuff. That guitar has a great resonance, shreader neck and vintage medium output 'pup. I would not trade that guitar for any other guitar ,even another Dinky

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

I love Explorers and Flying Vs, but I hate any "pointy" version of them from other companies.

Re: But I never wanted a Gibson or a Fender!

guess i should start looking when the thread started.. lol

Just cos the thread is old, doesn't mean it doesn't still have relevance .... exactly like the subject matter. Just like some of the new threads may be immediately relevant, but look at them in five years and they may be embarassing or meaningless.

I don't like basswood bodies.
