It's a sickness. I recently wired up a paul with custom 5 bridge and a2pro neck. It's a very well balanced and great sounding set but then I start asking myself "how much better would it be with a custom/59 hybrid and pearly gates at the neck"... but why

I tend to find something that works and I'm good. Yeah it would be nice to get anything I wanted, but I am pretty happy with what I have.

Good for you for being satisfied! I can’t stop scratching my itch. I’m already planning to sell one of my axes that I haven’t really bonded with in order to try something new with a new set of pups

Oh I get it. What I am obsessed with is getting my rig smaller, and more ergonomic with better tone. But my base tone is there already, and seems to be independent of what guitar I use.
