Cab facelift.... first pics.

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

thats absolutely fantastic! Good job.
Cheers man.

Looks great!!
Many thanks.

Wow!

That thing is looking great!
Well Chris, you are the guy that inspired me to even attempt this with your threads! I'm really grateful for the links you posted, they really helped. Cheers.

When I scrolled down to the first After photo, I said, "Holy " something that can't be posted here. Excellent work.
Many thanks.

Normally, I'm opposed to Orange cabs not being orange, buit that is gorgeous. I hope you have a Tiny Terror head to put on top of it.
My thoughts exactly! I do have an original Orange "Orange" 4 x 12 too which I used to use with my Tiny Terror, alas I sold it a couple of months ago to a mate who really wanted one but couldn't find the cash at the time so he's paying me in dribs and drabs. Cool little amps for sure and I'll get another or a dual Terror at some point. Thanks.

Cool indeed.
Thanks very much.

Splendid work! Wish I had those skills.
Cheers J man. Well believe me that alot of it is not the skills, more the balls to get down to it. You do need a certain level of skill to do a good job and a keen eye for detail to make that good job into an excellent one. I'm my own worst critique and I was really annoyed when I couldn't get the front corners perfect. A couple of mates saw it and just laughed at me because they think I'm too fussy! Now I've calmed down and found the correct corners I'm ok with it. Get an old cab and give it a go!

Excellent job, well done. You should send a pic to the previous owner & show them what they could have had. :1:
Thanks. Yes I should mainly because I felt rather cheated when I found one of the G12H 30's to be dead! Not very happy with that at all.

That looks great.
Cheers John J, you know I love white amps and cabs right?

Sweet! I can't imagine how much riffage that cab has already dished out.
I love salt/pepper grill cloth, especially on white.
Thanks Joe. Yeah, the guy I bought it off was in a touring band in the 80's through the 90's and he said it had been all over Europe. He was into Heavy Metal as it was although I didn't know the name.
Salt n Pepper is also my favorite cloth and you know, my sons HW Marshall as it as does my RK cab. But white Levant is my thing and my inspiration for this cab was the picture on the front of the Marshall book... the white half stack. I am looking for an early 70's Marshall small box 50 watt metal panel and some will think I'm mad but if I find one that sounds great I'm going to cover it in the same white levant.

excellent job
Cheers dude.

Fab looking stuff there Don!! I'll have to get you to sort out my battered 1936 cab!! :D
Hey Stevie thanks. On a serious note if you reall want it doing we could arrange a day where you come up and we'll go into my factory and do it. If you strip it and get the parts and cloth I'll be more than happy to help you mate! Let me know.

Fantastic! What speakers are going in that sexy thing?
Speakers should be in today and I'm going for 2 x G12 H anniversay and 2 G12 65's. I've never tried the Anniversaries and got a good deal, the 65's are speakers I bought for my self and put them in a cab I bought for my youngest son for safe keeping. It means I'll have to get him some Greenbacks now to get that cab back to original. My better half will be really happy!!!! Ha ha.

Yeah that looks great!
Cheers.

Wow thats an awesome job - very impressed!
Thanks.

*dogwhistle!
My thoughts when ever I see a white Marshall... should never have sold my White Ltd 1987 head..... doh. Cheers.

sweet mother of God thats gorgeous
Cheers dude.

wow thats spectacular! Maybe you can post a how to thread if you are so inclined. I haven't seen a good tutorial yet to re-tolex a cab and this turned out great so you'd be of good service to this community.
Many thanks. I do wish I would have taken more "work in progress" pics but I really was not very confident in this turning out so well. As I stated earlier, the guy who really inspired me is Chris aka Ayrton, his work is just exceptional and he has posted so many great pics and info in his threads. Whilst my cab does look pretty good, and I've tried to be patient ... just go back and find his threads and you'll see what I mean. His corners are perfect and that's what I wanted to achieve but I don't think it helped doing this all in one 4 mt length. Older Marshalls can be done in 4 pieces which would be more managable from a handling point of view. I had to take my cab into the factory and have a large area so I could spray the cab and lay the tolex out and prime it all and let it dry before giving a second coat, It was a bloody nightmare and had I posted pics of the struggle I had doing this on my own you would have all laughed your socks off!!! Lol I thought I had wasted my time and the money on the fabric and grille cloth when I started but just a deep breath... it really was a leap of faith once I started. My search facility won't work otherwise I would put up Ayrtons threads so you can see what I mean. Thanks for the comments though.

That cab just looks great!!!!
Cheers bud.

I'll walk the dogs (did I tell you we had a new (6 year old) dog day a couple of weeks ago? Ha ha... 3 to walk now. And I'll get the centre brace and speakers in. Thanks alot guys... means alot to hear positive things.

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Anybody who cares to answer......
I need to recover our JCM 800 4x12. The back panel is fine, I do not need to touch that. Can I do the rest of the cab with 3 yards of 54" material.?
Thanks

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

If you are going to do it in 1 piece I think you'll need 4 yards to be safe. If the cab has stringing front to back you'll be able to do it in 4 sections which you can use the full width of the material, 2 yards may even be enough.

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Good job bro...yeah, corners can be a biatch. I woulda loved to do an all white, but I really dig orange so it's a combo. I was gonna go with the salt/peppa grille, but I went with all black basket weave...I have a G12H anniv in my bottom cab, great tight bass and it helps the cleans too. Have fun

Thanks bud! You'll have to forgive me 'coz I wanted to mention those but I couldn't for the life of me remember who did them. Between you and Ayrton you've given me the bug now! I stated earlier in the thread I wouldn't do another... well low and behold if I didn't strip my main amp box last night so I could do that to match my newly covered cab! Lol.....

Got the speakers in, X pattern G65 and Anniversaries and tried it without the back just ... well because I had to. Ha ha Hopefully handles back tomorrow and back panels the day after.

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

No prob...have fun doin' the head, I sure it will look sweet. Oh yeah, that back panel makes all the difference! Bring on the thunder!

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Well, head box now done too! It looks awesome, pics when I get the handles back.

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Well, finally I can get a pic or 2 of the head and cab... only waiting on cream coloured knobs for the amp now but other than that it's done. The combination of G65's and Aniiversary G30H's sounds great at lower volume... can't wait to crank it!

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

looks great!...but that head needs black corners. sassy and classy..rock it!

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Stunning Don. Butnut's right, you need matching black corners!!! :)

Stunning looks and tone now, I'm not jealous much!!

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Cheers fella's. I know what you mean about the corners, but the Cornford ones are nickel plated so they'll stay. The Orange ones are black plastic as per the originals.

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Great job! Can I ask how the front of the cab is made up? Is the front facing frame seperate from cab, with the baffle recessed into it, and that is why you have the string/piping?

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Thanks! No the gold stringing is just for decoration. The grille cloth is attached to the front of the speaker baffle and getting it out was a bit of a nightmare because to remove it I had to get the internal bracing out which was glued as well as screwed. Then the baffle will come out of the back of the cab. Now it's back together I have not glued it so tha I can take the baffle out again if I need to without too much hassle.

Ok. Thanks. So there is just a reccess routed to put in string? I was also thinking of the basket weave, was it too un managable?

Re: Cab facelift.... first pics.

Yeah just a routed reccess about 3mm wide and 3mm deep. Ref the basket weave... I was just disappointed. It looked ok, but not as nice.
