excuse my ignorance, but can someone please explain to me the difference between distortion and overdrive pedals. for example the Boss sd1 vs Boss Ds1. and there effect on the tone on a tube amp

And also explain the difference if any between the ibanez tubsceamer and the maxon 808 reissue, besides price.

Overdrive pushes the amp's preamp section into clipping causing it to distort, but using the amps own tone in the process (for the most part).

Distortion adds it's own clipping into the signal flavoring the distorted tone with that of whichever pedal you're using.

Usually the effects of overdrive are much milder than that of distortion pedals.
