I think the next evolutionary pickup will be like no other pickup we could hardly imagine now. Like evolution, if you where back in dinosaur time you would think the next step would be a dinosaur even bigger with more Amor and sharper teeth. But evolution is tricky, what happen is a little fury thing with big brains turned out to be the next step and took over the world kinda. So I suspect the next pickup evolution will be something we can't hardly imagine and will probably surprise the check out of whoever comes up with it.
I been working on a tube pickup myself, so far I got it to work.but it would require a guitar with a body roughly the size of a baseman head, a really long power cord and a stand to set it on because it's so heavy. That doesn't even address the difficulty in playing a guitar like thing ten inches deep.

I been working on a tube pickup myself, so far I got it to work.but it would require a guitar with a body roughly the size of a baseman head, a really long power cord and a stand to set it on because it's so heavy. i've been working on a variable inductance pickup but it still is on the mental prototype stage, i bet the tube pickup also does

The output levels could be improved on some pickups, ekspecially the sets.

I heard a rumour that Apple is working with an undisclosed company on an iPickup. Haven't a clue on what kind of thing this might be if true or ever happens but if it does it will probably be merely a toy like iStomp and iRig.

Optical pickups have been around since the 70s. People just forget about things that failed in the market place a long time ago, so they bring them back and claim they're a futuristic new idea.

I have to admit, I have no idea how optical pickups work, or how they sound on either electric or electric/acoustics. But hey, that's why I ask you guys. Someone here knows. Hey, remember stereo pickups in the 80s?
