Can you?

put two EL84s into a 50 watt EL34 Laney, i.e. my AOR ? I know its sounds retarded as I assume they are different wattage tubes right ?

Re: Can you?

yes they are different wattage tubes but they are also different sizes with different pin outs so you physically cannot put a el84 in a el34 tube socket with out a yellow jacket style converter.

you could in theory put 6v6's in there but you would need to bias it and maybe make some other mods so you dont blow something up

Re: Can you?

As Jeremy said, THD Yellow Jackets or similar converters are the answer ( I think Groove Tubes also do these converters). And by fitting the converters with EL84's there is no need to re-bias your amp.

Re: Can you?

+1

The THD yellowjackets are cheap though and I've heard they work very well.

Too bad I hate the sound of EL84s!

Re: Can you?

You could put in a set of THD Yellow jackets -they are adapters that let you plug little 9-pin EL84's into big, 8-pin octal sockets. They handle the re-biasing and eveything.

On the surface, they're intended to drop the power on your big amp from 50 to about 18. It will also develop an EL84 flavor for obvious reasons. But it beats going deaf.

Edit: slow typing today - everyone beat me to it.

Ha! its like another option for attenuation .... I should get them in a future just for the recoding purposes.

Re: Can you?

I've got a pair (of Yellowjackts, that is) that I run in my Traynor from time to time. Not totally sold on them, but they do work as advertised without a hitch -- another sound, totally reversible, and no ill effects to the amp.

The one thing I was disappointed with was that they do nothing to change the overall character of your amp. I know now that's too much to ask. But it doesn't make my crunchy YCV50 Blue sound like a chimey Vox, so much as just move the voicing from lower mids to upper mids. YMMV with a different circuit, but the transformation wasn't as drastic as I'd hoped.

Basically, if you want a different sound and lowered wattage, though, go for it. THD makes good stuff.
