Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I think I'm gonna go with the G12H30 instead of either.....suppose to be the best of both. (?)

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

It would be a good (and economical) choice to explore Warehouse Guitar Speakers. They make a clone of the Classic 80 that just rocks! They call it the Classic Lead 12. I'm embarassed to admit that I have never had the chance to use greenbacks, but from what I understand, the G12-65 is very similar in tone, only it's a 65 watter. I use two cabs loaded with these (an '82 and a '79). I have a cab loaded with those WGS Classic 12's, the tone is very similar. The tone is very "woody", not overly bright, they sound killer. The cone material is made by the same company who manufactured for celestion for all those years, before they went with a Chinese manufacturer.

The best part is they're dirt cheap. I haven't checked since I bought mine (about a month), but these speakers were around $20 per speaker. I re-speakered a 4x12 for $109, including shipping! For the tones I'm getting, it's an incredible bargain.

Running my JCM800 2204 through a Marshall 4x12 loaded with the G12H-70's (including beam blockers), I had to keep the highs and presence down around "2". Now, running this cab in conjunction with the aforementioned WGS loaded cab, I'm able to actually use my high and mid knobs effectively.

BTW - my band just worked up "Unchained" and "Mean Street" by Van Halen, and the sound I'm getting works perfectly for that Fair Warning EVH tone.

Look 'em up on eBay. Grab a quad of them, you won't be disappointed!

BTW - they also have a V.30 clone, $21 per speaker. It'd be a really cheap way to test which you dig more......

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

It depends on the Greenback. New GB's have a lot of bite to my ears, even when broke in. This is why they are great for stinging blues leads. As a GB wears in over a period of years it gets warmer, but don't expect fairly new re-issue GB's to be smoother than played in V30's.

The V30 is the epitomy of smooth sustain in my opinion. GB's have more crunch.

Another factor is the cab. These speakers will sound very different from cab to cab, so it's hard to say that a GB sounds like this, and a V30 sounds like that, and call it good. I find the V30 to sound a little nasal in a small open back cab. Likewise, the GB doesn't have the low end of the heavy magnet speakers-opened back.
