Anyone got any experience of celstion G12L's?
Found some one selling a bunch of old stock for £20 a pop (about $30) and was considering getting a couple.

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

i think they are speaker that they used as oem stuff in some amps so that they could say "with celestion speaker" not bad, probably not great. for $30 they might be fine

Ah, so probably not much better than the stock 'celestion' speaker in my lowly MC212

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

it might be the stock speaker in your mc212. marshall used the g12l in a bunch of stuff, so did laney and lots of other companies

Hmm, well it's a Marshall Celstion speaker (what ever that means).
I'm actually half tempted to get a couple, I can probably sell them on the bay if they're no good and not lose much.

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

im not sure if there is other g12l speakers but the ones ive seen are 35w and some people say they really like the g12l-35

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

I like the G12L-35. They're smooth and react nicely. The only drawback is the low power, so you'd need a quad of them to work with a 100 watt amp. But they are really nice.

That's not a bad price either.

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

I've got a quad of them...not in a cabinet at the moment tho...I used them for many years in one cabinet with G12T-75's in another, or two.....Nice speakers. They don't seem to be the popular "mainstream" Celestion speaker. I don't use them these days because mine are 8ohm while all my other speakers are 16 ohm............Maybe it's tme to give then another go. I remember them being bright sounding with not alot of bass and very clear.

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

Well I hit the buy button on the g12l's and they arrived today.
First impression while unpacking them was that they're not as heavy as some ehort G12's I've come across in the past, then again the last G12 I handled was a alnico blue, which are quite heavy beasts.
They are, however, a full kg heavier than the 'Design for Marshall' Celestion's that come with the MC212 that they're going into.
Now the new speakers are 4ohm so needed wiring in series rather than the parallel wiring that is there to start with so before getting the iron out I thought I'd do a side by side test wiring just one of the new speakers in before changing everything.
The G12L is most definitely more defined than the 'Designed for Marshall' but still has good bass response.
After putting both speakers in (not helped by some muppet at marshall cross threading one of the mounting screws) and sorting out the wiring I cranked it up a bit and I must say that it does seem to have more bite to it. switching to the dirty channel and it manages dirty and aggressive without all the gain turned to max.
I think I like em but the real proof will come next week when they get cranked up for band practice... I can hardly wait :)

But my initial thoughts are that the old G12L is a good first upgrade to take from stock speakers for those on a budget.

I got them from a company called Lean Business who are the cheapest suppliers of Celestion speakers I've found thus far in the uk.

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

The G12L is a decent speaker. Almost has a Greenback vibe.

The problem with those speakers is the small magnet really kills any low end the speaker might have.
I still have a quad of them in a 4-12. They sound good, especially in a closed back cab.

The magnet is a bit twee, still twice the size of the one from the ones that came out.

Re: Celstion G12L speakers?

Ok, speakers have now been used at loud enough to be heard over the drummer levels and I must say I'm quite impressed.
Everything is just that bit more clear and pinched harmonics are easier to achieve (or I may just be playing better).
Drawback is they to show the frailties of the clean channel on my Ashdown, it's a nice enough sound but lacks low end warmth.
I'm sure there's a way of modding the amp by changing a resistor or a cap somewhere in the chain... but I'm not feeling that brave as I have no idea what I'm doing :)
