Hey I have 3 filter caps in my amp and I am looking to lessen the stiffness of the power supply by reducing filter cap values. Right now the caps are 550v and 100uf a piece. Would 550v 50uf value be ok to install instead. Or is it ok to just remove one of the caps to have 100uf instead of 200uf.The amp is a Peavey Windsor 100 watt head. The caps are c-10/c-11 on scehmatic and c-12 is the screen cap at 100uf as well.

I would think, for a test, it would make your life easy to try lifting one of the two 100 mic in there now.
That cuts the filtering in half...should be enough to give you Some Idea.
Can you see what brand they are.?
It has been awhile, but i cannot remember being able to buy 550 Volt Caps... that is why i was wondering about the brand.

Well I may try 500v if I cant find 550's.I believe you can just life one cap off and run it like that.

I talked to Peavey they have to be at least 550v so Im thinking maybe 68uf instead of 100uf.

Do you know the tolerance of an Elytiic Cap.?
Its conceivable.......if the 68 is at its high and the 100 is at its low, they could almost be the same value.
Do whatever you want of course, but the 100 is already there......... :)

What mics do you think I should try then?Should I just go with the 100's or maybe 47ufs something like that?

Are we talking about the same thing.?
The 100 is already in the amp You just need to lift one of those first two.
If you still want to proceed after that.....yeah, i would buy whatever you can get in 550V.
I doubt you will have much choice (do not know how much room you have in there) unless you want to run caps in series.
Have you looked.....can you buy 550V caps.?
You are also feeding a 4x6L6 amp.?.....100 watts.....you are not going to be able to get away with too much less i would not think.
Anyway.....do you have any jumpers.?
You could (again, just as a test) run your two 100/550 in series. That will give you 50 Mics. If that will run the amp, you can take it from there.
Be careful in there.

no its a EL34 x4 100 watt amp.And yeah I have seen 550v 47uf. I am trying to soften the power supply up for more sag.The first two caps are 100uf(200uf) and the screen cap is 100uf(300uf)total I am trying to make it a more vintage type power supply and feel with the sag. So should I get 3 47uf caps or just try removing one of the caps and have 100uf instead of 200uf?If you think I can still run the amp like that I'll just pull one.The amp is about 10 years old so not sure if I should just replace the caps for new ones. Its kinda like making it a older JCM800 power type supply is what my goal is.

100w amps not not known for sag at all. marshall, fender, sunn, hiwatt, and all others that i can think of are loud stiff amps

Yeah...i hear you. For the price of caps, it is tempting to just go ahead and replace them all.
They have 100 Mics on the screens as well.? So much of the ripple is gone right after the Reservoir/Power tube caps. Not sure i get the whole 100 on the screens idea...but Peavey Knows Way More Than I Do.
What does a Marshall Super Lead have.? You may want to shoot for that.
BUT.....i would first try just lifting that first 100, and whatever else you decide to do at the reservoir...make sure THAT works, and then proceed from there, if you know what i mean.
One thing at a time so you know What/Where it went wrong...if it does.

He said it is 10 years old, it might have been "the right amp" at one time.
Peavey was damn near giving these amps away. Weren't they just a few hundred bux at one time.?
At any rate, i think the OP is just trying to use some electronic skills to improve what he has. Tinkering can be its own reward. :)
But i get what you are saying. The bulk of players are better suited buying the right amp to begin with.
Then again.....LOTS of guy live nowhere near a store with a variety of amps to play. Many guys are forced to "Buy and Try" whether they want to or not.

Might ask the guys over at the metroamp forum. Those guys have held many discussions on the various filtering of the various plexis and the effects therefrom. Some of the early models had 32/32 caps and only 16uf caps on the preamp.

Are the caps "snap in" type? You should be able to find those rated 550V without too much trouble.

I think they are solder in. My tech said something about having to solder them in when I get them. I was thinking going 550v 47uf's I know they still make those.

If peavey say's 550V is lower limit, then ask them if using 630V is acceptable. You should be able to get more cap values of that voltage i think.

Wow.....really.?
I guess my problem is, i look at everything from the perspective a a circa 1968 FMV. Everything is Axial and hand-wired. :)
Is 630V fairly common for a Radial Cap.? Cannot imagine that upping the V rating would be any cause for concern, as long as they fit.......

When I wanted filter caps, the local stores around me had 630v ones readily available but I wanted exact replacements so didn't bother following it up. Looking up mouser now, those seem to come in 2200uF & higher values lol

Also good point about the size. The ones I had ordered were right value & my amp has these plastic rings with nut bolt to secure the cap on the chassis. When they arrived, the size ended up being smaller & I had to stuff something in the ring to fill out the gap lol

Higher voltage rating is fine, lower value than suggested has a risk of melting or burning up since the incoming voltage would be beyond its limit.

Yeah voltage wise the guy at Peavey said 550v min but could go higher if I had to. Im just trying to figure out what mics to go with to make it more vintage plexi like feel softer in power supply.
