Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

Seems like over the last 10 years or so, EVERY band, especially new bands, were using PRS. All the photos in the guitar rags had them holding PRS'. (It was Gibsons in the years before that)
Now, it seems more and more are using EB guitars. Ive played a Petrucci and I loved the color, but the guitar didnt impress me alot. Im sure it probably had everything to do with the fact it was at GC and the setup was crap..

Anyone else noticing this? Are the EB guitars that good, or are PRS going down?

Just some thoughts from a gear junkie...

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

None of my favourite bands can afford either of those.

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

Who are these so called EB artists that you are talking about. The only modern artists I can think of that aren't sig model guys is John Mayer and Bonamassa.

Seems like a bunch of the djent kids have EBs

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

EBMM is a much smaller company, Sterling Ball has has admitted he as no aspirations of being the biggest guitar maker , as they're happy being the biggest guitar string maker, whereas Paul has brought his company into the top 3 (Fender, Gibson, PRS). I have both an EBMM Axis and PRS. I bought the EBMM 11 years ago.

Sterling Ball admits he has no idea how to build a guitar, he "opens the yellow pages" and hires engineers to do it for him- whereas Paul Reed Smith started as a repairman, then lutheir, trained everyone, and is very active in the designs.

PRS has a choice of neck shapes and nut sizes. EBMM does not.

EBMM makes a fine guitar, though it is still a factory guitar. PRS takes alot more care and detail every step of the way. The EBMM comes with medium to low action, if you want lower action, despite EBMM claiming you can do it with a truss rod adjustment, you need to take it to a lutheir to shim the neck at the proper angle. There's no need to do this on my PRS to get ultra low, buzz free action- a simple truss rod adjustment and bridge height adjustment will do it.

So from owning both, the PRS is a slightly better made guitar.

I can concur with this general sentiment. Some EBs I have owned have needed a little work to get them playing to my standards. A PRS has never needed anything but a light setup to get there.

They're very different though- almost gibson/fender different, so apples to oranges.

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

Yeah it really depends on the music the person is listening to. A lot of the music I listen to the people use Schecter, or Dean.

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

What is a djent kid?

It's like crazy proggy guitar music or something like that.

Tosin Abasi uses Ibanez I think? The only fairly popular bands I can think of off the top of my head using EB guitars (Besides Dream Theater) would be Chelsea Grin and Born of Osiris.

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

Periphery uses Ibanez. :)

No offense, but I'm also wondering who all these EB artists are.

Periphery use a mix live and whatever they can get their hands on in the studio (no offence intended to them).

Actually Mark Holcomb of Periphery plays EBMM JPs as an exclusive endorsement.

Jake has an exclusive Ibanez deal.

Misha uses mostly Mayones, Daemoness and Jackson live (I think).

Then in the studio they use Bernie Rico Jr, Mayones, Blackmachine, Strandberg , Jackson, Ernie Ball, Ibanez, Decibel and Daemoness guitars.

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

I thought this thread was about installing a PRS pickguard on an Ernie Ball.

HOLY CRAP I GOT OLD!!! I have no idea who any of these bands are except Dream Theater.

On topic Steve Morse (Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs) has a signature EB and Jerry Cantrell (AIC) used an EVH EB for a while. Albert Lee has a signature EB and Brad Paisley has an Albert Lee sig or two.

The EB EVH Jerry Cantrell has was actually given to him by Eddie, along with a few 5150 stacks

Yeah. I also love the story of how he got them. Eddie being all nice and all sending all that gear to his house.

I haven't noticed a lot of people playing EB or PRS. A lot of bands I don't like (Staind, Between the Buried and Me, Nu metal in general) used PRS but they're still nice guitars, that really can be used for any genre. Not as trendy I suppose.

And Ernie Ball. The only person I've ever seen (in person) use one was Steve Lukather. Not very popular or trendy either.

I would like both guitars very much though. I'd love a Music Man Axis and a PRS double cut.

Trendy now would be: Ibanez, Dean, Schecter, etc. But still some of their guitars I'd really like.

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

I thought ESP was the latest fad, but maybe that's already past. When you visit forums where all the young kids hang out like Ultimate Guitar, they're all after the ESP's (LTD's if they can't afford one), Ibanez, and Schecter's. They like the Petrucci EB/MM model a lot but too expensive for them.

I own a EB/MM Axis with a Floyd, and it kicks so much ass. Amazing playability and tone.

Re: Changing of the guard? from PRS to EB

My EB is the best guitar I have ever played. Its a standard model that I modded for myself. PRS tends to be too heavy for me, and a little too pretty.

LOL!!

okay, let me say maybe my post is alil overblown. Im not saying that OMG why is everyone out there now playing EB?? Im just saying that it seems to be the new hot ticket. I dont have my guitar rag in front of my, but one of them in the new Guitar world (or whatever it is) with REV Billy and Dan from black keys on the front. There is a pic of a new band and all three players are holding ebs. Also, Ive noticed alot of other guys using them as of late. Joe B, and Bulb (of course Misha is a gear slut cuz I see him playing EVERYTHING). They just seem to be popping up ALOT lately..

Oh yeah and ESP too. But I have to admit ESP/LTD can make some solid instruments. I prefer those to Jackson. I also would really like an LTD EC-1000 FR.
