cheapo 4x12 or decent 2x12

Question guys.. I pretty much already know the answer but I thought I'd get a few second opinions. I was thinking about ditching my Marshal VS412 Cabinet (cheapo cab Marshall made for their second generation valvestates in the 80's) and picking up an Avatar 2x12 with twin V30's or something similiar. I never really gig... at least that's not for a while down the road...most of my use is just jamming with friends and such. Will the better speakers in the Avatar make up for the loss of the 2 other speakers? Will the difference in sound be worth the trouble?

Quality!!!!! No question about it!

Definitely, the speakers in those VS cabs are Celestions in name only, not to mention the construction of those cabs is not as solid as the "real" Marshall cabs. An Avatar 2-12 with good speakers will sound better and probably be as loud. You can always add another 212 later if you need it.

Z-best cab.

Or if you don't want so much, try a bogner cube 1-12. It might match your marshall nicely.

You can certainly check out Celtic's ext cabs. Scott is one of the forum admins, who is getting great reviews for his stuff.

if you haven't heard, check out the sweet ext cab at celticamps.com

Good quality woods and cab dimensions will have a nice impact on your tone, and as things roll on, you'll appreciate the good quality things you have.

Both the guitar players in my last band had HK Vortex half stacks. They sounded pretty good. They were cheap, excessively light and they sounded decent with the Vortex heads. HOWEVER- running either of my amps through either of their cabinets was really disappointing. They didn't work well with either my Marshall or my Park. So I guess it comes down to what you're using for a head.

The other side of this is that 2x12s don't sound or feel or respond like a 4x12, but smaller. Plenty of people enjoy 2x12s for what they do sound like, but if you're expecting it to sound, respond and feel like a 4x12, you might be disappointed.

^^true dat

I had a 2x12 and it never sounded like my jcm800 half stack. Also, your marshall cab probably looks pretty cool for the name fetish musician crowd which may git you in a band or in a better band. I say stay with the louder 4x12, save up some $$ and "git-r-done"!

Re: cheapo 4x12 or decent 2x12

What if I changed the speakers in my cab to nicer ones? (ie, real Celestions)? Would that be very difficult? Would sound quality increase substantially enough to warrant the effort? My cab is pretty light.. 60 pounds.. so I'm not sure if it has enough UMPH behind it anyway.. if that makes sense.

I say just buy another cab too, not just speakers. The cab makes a big difference.

stick with what you got; save up, then sell the old cab.
