My specs:
  • Bedroom jammer
  • 100% heavy rock/metal, don't have much interest in mellower tones, just an occasional clean
  • Rhythm oriented, not much of a lead player
  • Guitars: Basswood w/SH-6 Distortion, Basswood w/Dimebucker, & Mahogany w/EMG 81/85

The JS is probably too much, the XXX might not be enough, & the 6505 seems juuuuuuust right. Honestly, the 40w 1x12 is most likely plenty for me, but too much is never enough, right?

I'm open to other options, doesn't have to be Peavey, but I don't want SS this time around. I'm not a big pedal-head, I want all the distortion from the amp. Would probably plan on a Noise Suppressor or similar gate, but that's about it...maybe a chorus for the clean channel.

I see lots of talk about changing tubes, speakers, & adding dist pedals for clean boost; don't any of these things sound good out of the damn box? I can understand & enjoy modifying, but I don't want to have to plan on extra gear just for it to sound good.

(I should say, this is pure window shopping; I have no approval from the Bank Manager for any pricey purchases at this point, but I sure would like a replacement for my old Bandit 112.)

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

Triple xxx should be loud enough. I have a 5150 combo and usually only leave the volume around 1 or 2

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

Not sure, I've never had a peavey combo but I love my 6505+.

Try a 6505 combo or 5150 combo.

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

I like the sound of the Triple XXX the most. I don't really like the sound of the JSX at all. The Triple XXX would be my choice. It's plenty loud enough, and it's the smallest and lightest one of the bunch.

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

find a used 5150 combo, sounds better than the head version and usually go pretty cheaply.

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

the 6505 does it for you man.And it will sound really similar to your riff tracker sound you use for your recordings.A litlebit darker maybe. But a MXR 108 10 band eq will do the job well!
Go for it!

that music store on bell and 16th street (sec) in phoenix was in the process of shutting the sales portion of their store down when i moved from town 2 weeks ago. they were really trying to get rid of their bigger amps (like 2-12 combos). i think it was called noteworks. you may find something for a good price there if the still have inventory.

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

If you're a bedroom jammer and rocking out with 40 tube watts, you must have a hell of a bedroom!

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

the 6505 will blow the roof off your domicile. one of the loudest combos I've ever played :yell: with a good set of tubes, it's a great amp for hard rock & metal.

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

BEDROOM jammer? Try the JS MiniColossal.:D

NO JOKE, that thing rocks !!! :smokin:

Or, if you want a BIG AMP FEEL, check out the ValveKing (50W 1x12) - my cousin has the 2x12, 100Watter, and w. the help of Master Vol. can give you a semi-good "BedRoom" vol. tone !!!

But i would look into the JS MiniColossak first ! :smokin:

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

Sounds a little like my predicament. I have a similar budget, and I want good modern grind and mellow classic crunch in a 50ish watt combo.

I'm about 90% sure I've decided on a Genz Benz el Diablo 60 combo.

I have a medium sized room with a 120watt halfstack.

No problems here... Was using a 50watt tube classic 50 for the past year before I got the 6505.

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

I would go with the 40w XXX. Just because it's 40w. It's still going to be loud though. I've got a 5150II and without an attenuator it can't go past 2 without being too loud for my place.

Re: Choose a Peavey combo for me

Peavey Ultra 112...60W all tube. generally sell for less than $400.

I own the 212 version and it's much smoother than the 6505 combo I tried.
The only amp I've played that I like better is the Mesa Mk IV. But the mesa is almost 5 times what I payed for the peavey.
