Cleanest EL84 amp?

I ve been reading the thread about the Peavey amps (started by GJ) and the Classic 50's reviews on harmony central. It seems that a lot of people find this amp very clean, and some seem to prefer it over a fender deville!!

So which is the cleanest (or one of the cleanests) amp running on EL84 ?

Thanks

Andreas

I dunno about your question.. but.. like.. I didn't like the clean on the Peavey. The drive channel was very cool and liquid, but the clean, on all the guitars I tried it.. just didnt click with me.

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

I guess that what I wrote may be the general impression I got going through the reviews.

As far as my question goes: It may be a little TOO general for people to answer. I can't make it any better: Which amp (running on EL84) has very good - exellent cleans?

Thanks anyway TP

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

The clean channel of a Boogie F-30 is very clean and it is about the loudest 2XEL84 amp I've played.

My Matchless SC-30 is plenty clean at lower volumes. Even at higher volumes it doesn't get muddy.

I'd say the Matchless is the best one I've ever owned all in all but I liked my Vox AC30 alot too...only it was just to loud and heavy.

The Vox might've been louder and cleaner...maybe because it had two 12's and the Matchless only has one 12. Not sure...

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

I don't know about the cleanest el84 amp, but I do know something about an AMAZING amp with el84s.

The Dr. Z Maz Jr. 18 watter.

From country to rock to blues to jazz to fusion to funk, it can deliver. Takes pedals soo well too.

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

The Peavey Classic 50 4-10 with good tubes installed has a great clean channel. And, because it has 4 EL-84's in a faux tweed box, it sounds glassier than the Deville or Bassman......since those are 6L6. Plus, the gain channel on the Peavey sounds better than the Fender Devilles gain channels. The only downfall is that the Classic 50 can't handle high volume the way a more expensive EL-84 amp can. If you compare a Matchless to the Classic 50, both will sound nice at room levels, but once you crank them up, the Matchless just sounds better, while the Peavey gets blatty. It also has something to do with the Celestion 12's compared to the Eminence 10's.

I saw one. Or at least a Z amp where I generally go. I seriously need to just.. sit down and try it some day, I keep hearing such great things.

If I get a classic 50 212 combo and add another 2 V30 celestions in an extension cab, how will that sound? (with new tubes of course)

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

A friend of mine plays an old Epi archtop (with .070 to .016 strings) thru a Peavey 50 4x10 and that amp stays clean and loud. I've never heard any other EL84 amp do that at that volume and with that kind of input.

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

I wanted to add Budda SD30, though you might get some break
and at moderate volumes I loved the Mesa Boogie Blue Angel

JOE, what do you think of the Classic 50 head with a 2x12 for cleans?

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

Seems that the PV classic 50 is quite good. I wnat to know what you people think about running it through 4 12s !

I used to own a Classic 50. I loved the drive channel, and I think it would sound great through a 4x12 cab w/GBs or Vin 30s. However, the cleans, while being OK, do not compare with an AC 30. The shimmer factor is not at all close.

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

I like el84 cleans (and dirty sounds for that matter) the most (even better then any fender i've played) the best cleans are from VOX AC 30s or anything based off this circuit (Machless DC-30/SC-30, Laney VC30, Crate V series etc) and I love the Orange AD 30 for crunch, slightly dirty clean sound.

Re: Cleanest EL84 amp?

the vox ac-30 is known to be THE CLEANEST amp built, and its got el 84, i plan on getting one within a year, but id love to have to, because those amps cranked sound just as good as they do clean
