Cloth behind nut

Re: Cloth behind nut

Why not put a tree on it, looks a lot better than a sock/ rag? I meant that's what the trees are made for.

Re: Cloth behind nut

I've never heard of this behind the nut ringing before. Ill just tape up behind my Dean and see if there is a difference.

Re: Cloth behind nut

I use a Velcro cable tie to cut down the vibration- I seriously cannot use this guitar without it- the sympathetic vibration after playing an open G chord and open D are unstoppable. It's not a setup issue, it's purely design. The strings extend for a long distance, unimpeded from the nut to the tuner. A string tree will reduce that, but it wouldn't be right on this guitar. (as it wasn't behind the bridge on my Jazzmaster either).

Yeah i use the Shure cable tie. It's the perfect fit for that duty ,and it improves the tightness in open chords. The "blowing" sound of the first attack is not as present anymore ,and the unwanted vibration behind the nut disappered.
BTW ,my guitar has a reversed headstock ,ant i tune on Standart D and Droped C.So the thickest and the strongest string after the Nut is looser ,and longer. That can be really PITA sometimes.!

Re: Cloth behind nut

So do you guys find strats do not exhibit this since they have a tree for the high E and B strings? I was purposely listening for it today and there was nothing at the shop. I played a bunch of strats including cheap squire all through a loud high gain tone.

I used to play in a Pantera tribute thing and there's a lot of tight stops but never had no headstock noise. Besides that Epiphone up there, What kind of guitars do this?

Re: Cloth behind nut

I have no problem on any of my Les Pauls, and none on my Telecaster either. The Olympic just has a long headstock that's pitched back, and nothing between the nut and tuners. I played this thing last night, and it's the open G that's a bear. We're not talking about high gain, quick stop metal stuff. Just staccatto chord playin at low gain.

Here's a pic sorta showing the headstock pitch (and the headstock break repair).
