Coated Strings

Re: Coated Strings

I recently discovered Aurora strings which are coated. You can get them in dozens of colours: black, white, gold, silver, pink, green, blue, red... you name it. Blacks and whites are matte finish so they sound a bit different and the rest of the colours are shiny.

To me they are the best sounding strings I've ever played. They sound and fell better than any un-coated string I've ever played including D'addario, EB, DR, GHS, Dean Markley. I'm not saying thos brands sound bad, they very good string also and I've had no problems with any of those. These Aurora strings just are better for me, plus you can get them in interesting colours and they even make sets in which every string is in different colour. How cool is that! I have these "Rainbow sets" in my Yngwie start and a Randy Rhoads-ish guitar.

They sound even brighter and more open than un-coated strings and they last much longer too.

I have not tried any other coated string so I can't compare, except DR Neon strings which I didn't like that much. Although they sounded and felt good they just wouldn't hold in tune. I had them in a Floyd Rose guitar and the high e went flat and the low went sharp to the point where the range of my fine-tuners just couldn't keep up, which hasn't happened with any other strings.

Re: Coated Strings

not a fan of coated at all. So much of it is a scam. After a few packs I feel like I've been robbed and should have bought a pedal, or cables, or something that isn't disposable like strings. Never buying them again.

The whole titanium thing has nothing to do with the strings in the Ernie ball sets, it's just the actual ball that has titanium winding for reinforcement. Wont do a single thing for tone, and the packaging makes it seem like they're ACTUALLY WOUND UP WITH TITANIUM and sales reps will keep saying how they're TITANIUM STRINGS.... not really, there's a few turns of titanium at the base and they're dunked in some poly coating..

One thing I will pay for is a great set of flatwounds. Those actually do last 6+months and keep sounding great for what they're good for.. Coated sets are just 3 dollar packs dunked in 'poly-web'....sounds like polyurethane. I don't want that crap on my strings.

Re: Coated Strings

I like Elixir nano webs a lot. The smooth feel is nice and they last a long time.

I recently tried the new Dean Markley Helix strings....they have an elliptical winding which gives a very smooth feel and incredible life. I may switch for a while.

Re: Coated Strings

yeah i'm in the no coated camp. I think a lot of live players would agree that coated strings dont live up to the hype. Not to product push but ernies pure nickle are probably an industry standard.
Also if you are serious about strings like some people are. I would suggest getting a couple of sets of different manufactures and record your self and listen back within a days time and then you can probably make a more informed choice about the tone. Otherwise i think the longer you play X brand the more you may just become comfortable with said brand.

Thats just my 2.5 cents

I'm not a coated string fan. Just give me D"addario's

Re: Coated Strings

I'm in the coated camp. My perspiration seems to be ridiculously corrosive, back when I used uncoated sets I'd be lucky to get two weeks out of them. For my acoustic I use Elixir Nano 80/20s, for my electrics it's DR Silver Stars, and my basses have D'addario EXPs.
