Combo: New speaker vs. 2x12 cab

StrangeSound

GlossesForNothin'
Hey folks,

I've got a Vintage 30 (England) speaker in my Screamer combo but I don't like the sound when it's cranked..I lowered the highs and it's ok sounding..but I need more beef in the tone, mainly playing solos.

Scott Henderson mentions on his site that he detests the V-30 and his arguments (kinda double note sound when it's over a certain amount of volume) appeared sometimes also here. I know that I should use my ears but the stuff he mentioned is also my point of view.

I consider to buy a Classic Lead 80 speaker and test it with the Screamer, if it sounds better, I sell the Vintage 30.

But I could save some money and buy a cool 2x12 cab..probably a mix of the Classic Lead and Greenbacks, if it's possible(?) and leave the V30 speaker in the combo alone.

I'm sure that a cab has more "oomph" and balls but I'm really eager to see how much difference a new speaker will make.

I'm also aware of the fact that in a band you have a complete different game to play and the upper-mids bump of the V-30 could be gold worthy..but I'll hear it then in the next band rehearsal, perhaps my concern will disappear then and I keep the V-30:D

What are your experiences?

Re: Combo: New speaker vs. 2x12 cab

I wrote a mail to the german Celestion distributor and they said that this speaker is a special speaker, it's not available everywhere because of the technical background and it costs 225€ plus VAT!..ok, at this price it has to be special :32::omg: So, the price of the german shop is ok, I think!

Re: Combo: New speaker vs. 2x12 cab

Get a 1x12 Engl cab with V30. The mix of open back and closed back with 2 V30s works killer with the Engl voicing, at least that's what i've experienced with my Sovereign(very similar to the screamer). Also you'll have the extra beff you want.

Thats my set up and the V112 cab adds a load of bottom end grunt to the tone. Without the cab, I run the bass at like 3 o'clock and with the cab, usually between 9 and 10 o'clock, thats how much difference there is!!!!

Re: Combo: New speaker vs. 2x12 cab

I would go with an extension cab. Do you need to have celestions because there are other brands who make copies of old celestions like weber and eminence. Weber also let you choose wattage and type of magnet (alnico or ceramic) and you can even design your own speakers.

Re: Combo: New speaker vs. 2x12 cab

i know what you mean. reminds me a little on my engl thunder
sound situation. three steps how i reached my sound:
1) break in the celestion, no mercy, id needs to be played a lot and
.... will sound better
2) replaced v1 with a jj ecc803s gold (added some warmth, therefore
.... it's less biting again)
3) i added a 112 cab (2/3back)with an eminence 'the governor'.
.... it added lots of lower mid richness and some bass. the cab is very
.... resonant.

i like the setup a lot (i now the cab nees finishing, but i like the sound)

Great! Thanks a ton guys!

I will check the JJ803s out and buy a 12AT7(ECC81) for the phase inverter (got a ECC83 there now). I'm not fixed on Celestion only! I'm just familiar with Celestion but if there's a nice Jensen or Eminence out there, no problem. Some Eminence speaker look really good..nice frequence curve.

Re: Combo: New speaker vs. 2x12 cab

I'm with Niels, the G12-65 is a GREAT speaker!

I'm not sure how much they are where you live but they are significantly higher than the regular MIC Celestions.....that said they are great speakers.

Weber also makes a clone the 1265. Weber reconed my 1280s as 1265s and I'm really digging them.

In any case in an open back cab you might want more bass....in which case, if you get the Weber, you can get a heavy mag, or a 55Hz cone.
