I plan on buying a Boss Compression/sustain (the blue one)

how does this affect my sound?

whats the best way to use it?

also, whats the best way to boost your sound with a tubescreamer/overdrive pedal?

Re: Compresor-tube screamer? HELP

The compressor traditionally is used for clean boost. But it can be tweaked to use in a high gain situation. I've always used a TS- style pedal for lead boost.I set the level around 2:o'clock and gain to taste. The TS EQ is pretty neutral, But it does have a little mid bump that I find useful in cutting though in the mix. Although some don't like this.

Re: Compresor-tube screamer? HELP

Well, if you use TS on constant basis for rythm and leads(on all the time) into a tube head like 51/50 the best setup is between 0 and 2 on the drive and 8-max on the level. And I agree, compressor is for that clean jazz/progerssive metal sound. You can figure out a way to run it on your high gain set up, but you will not be able to get away from having an "overprossed" typa' tone.

Re: Compresor-tube screamer? HELP

Compressors are for the purpose of evening out the attack and adding sustain. I feel that the best use of a compressor is after the player is able to "compress" with his/her fingers. This is because the effect can be noticable, and sounds terrible if it is used to cover up unrefined playing. The best is for a player to fully have control over dynamics and use a compressor at a subtle setting for fine-tuning. Compressors can also be used for a clean boost effect with added control over dynamics.
