they do that here too.JB_From_Hell said:I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but from what JP (WFD) has told me, it doesn't really sound like things are very legit in Brazil. For instance, he told me that their customs people open packages coming into the country on a regular basis.

what is his IP adress? the only way I contacted him was through the email adress I gave before. I am very greatful of any help i can get, and I know it is most likely impossible tp find him. I just wasn't sure what you meant by his IP adress?deftgala said:LEDZEP, if Proxy is able to help out in this way, allow him to. Losing $900 is not fun, especially at your age. This scammer can be found with the proper help. I only know that IP addresses can be traced to an exact location. I haven't any idea how to do it... but some will know how...
keep your moral and dont accept the defeat too easily... try all you can to figure this out. Its only been a short while and within a week or two, you may find gratification in actually knowing how to get him!
I feel your pain, man.. I've had things stolen from under my nose before and only wish I had SD forum members give me ideas on how to deal with the situation. This is truly a great place to get advice from others around the world.

theboatcandream said:To find out someone's exact address, what you need to do is use that IP to find out what internet service provider is being used. Then you approach that ISP with a warrant and they can give the authorities all the information they have on that client as well as the online activities that client has performed, including what websites and files they have viewed or downloaded.
The problem is, if he's using a public computer, then there's not much you can do. Good scammers will often drive long distances just to avoid an IP address which gives away their home town.
IP address is like your computers unique number on the internet or in a network, so its liek your phone number is unique to you etc...ledzepp29 said:what is his IP adress? the only way I contacted him was through the email adress I gave before. deftgala said:1) How can the IP of the computer that the scam artist used be tracked down?
2) Does LedZep need to talked to the guy over MSN, or something to get it?
3) If the fraudulent seller is using a laptop, is it just as hard to find him as if he were using a public computer?
4) Now that I think about it, can't some of this information about the exact locaton of the computer be found in the "extended heading" of the email that Led Zep received from this person?
Sorry, but that made me chuckle.proxy said:subseven
proxy said:4. I don't think the email header would give ou too much because with like hotmail and such you are filling out a form on the server hotmail is on and it makes the transfer to the server your own email account is with.
If he is using a client like outlook, thunderbird etc, the message travels from your comp, to your own email server, to the their email server, and then if they are using a client, to their computer.deftgala said:I think I understand what you are saying here. Let me clarify. The entended header will only show MY information if I send out an email and not let the recipient see my information?
Most broadband connections have a static IP assigned, which means it's always the same for a period of time until the ISP provider changes it to another (some can allow you to renew your IP, I'm not sure how).
I'll try to do this, but after reading what TO said, and him being a cop, it looks like there is nothing I can do, even if we did find out where he's located, what would we do then? he could be moving around, from place to place.proxy said:If he is using a client like outlook, thunderbird etc, the message travels from your comp, to your own email server, to the their email server, and then if they are using a client, to their computer.
But if they are going to like www.hotmail.com, typing their messages there, your not gonna get any info in the header (or at least usable info for our sake). If like a drop box for mail at the post office was a server (i.e. hotmail, gmail, etc...), then they can't really tell who mailed it besides the return address (your email). The best they could narrow it down sort of in this situationw oudl be the drop box (server) and if we are to narrow it down to a server like hotmail, we are talking about like 1million users.
IM (AIM, MSN, Yahoo) would be like a phone call. While your text messenging goes through a few servers, when you direct connect, use microphone, send picture etc... these servers would rather not have to deal with that data so you are directly connected. By using netstat in ms-dos, you can see all your connections to other ips, aka the guy.
So for the IMing, I would email the guy you wish to speak to him through it. Then ask him to send some pics through IM and this is when you would be directly connected and could get his IP.

They might, I'm not sure whose jurisdiction wire transfers are, but all they can do is what I did. Write a warrant to the ISP provider and get the subscriber information (assuming it's a US ISP provider who will submit to a local US judge's warrant), and even then, what happens when you find out the guy is another country, and a crime ridden third-world country at that - nothing. The time and expense, not to mention liaison with a country like that; it just isn't going to happen IMO, not for $900. ****, they can't even control millions of $$ the drug cartels launder through official banks down there, what do you suppose can be done with $900 from a kid in the USA? Sorry, just a real life perspective.deftgala said:TattoedCarrot, do you think the police in Zep's neighborhood would involved themselves if he went to them with some valid information?
