Considering an SG. Help!?

Re: Considering an SG. Help!?

as for the question for which genres the SG can be used for.. depends on the pups ;)

you can play anything from jazz, any type of rock, any type of metal, christian music, country etc etc etc
the most versatile set of pups in it would be a JB/Jazz set up for split and paralel.

Re: Considering an SG. Help!?

Still have a 61lp (think SG) a strat and PRS CE24-
to me the primary issue is sustain/weight and pups as everyone else has said-
The SG can get just about every tone that an LP can, but it can't match the sustain- This has never bothered me becuase I have had to 'thin' out the tone of every LP that I've ever owned in a band environment as have folks like Tom Shultz-

I've gotten teleish sounds out of sgs with taps and came close to a stratish sound on a 3 pup custom-

So in my mind SGs live in between LPs and Fenders and as a result are one of the most versital gtrs out there today-

Btw, saw ocasik live in late 70s and that SG sounded great, although easton was playing a number of other gtrs instead of a tele-
cheers

They have amazing fret acess, swap out the pups (if you feel you need to) and you have an excellent hardtail "shred" axe.

I know Gomano uses SG's and shreds just fine..
Ok correction then. You can shred on a SG, but I just don't think it sounds nearly as good as it would on another guitar.

Re: Considering an SG. Help!?

btw boneslaw, who do you keep referring to when you saw "H"?

Re: Considering an SG. Help!?

get a les paul man. I have a sg, and love it to death. but you can really get an SG sound from a les paul..you cant get a les paul sound from an sg

Re: Considering an SG. Help!?

I agree that you can play any genre of music on any guitar. There are just so many factors in the chain.

Although a strat is associated with blues and clean single coil sounds, the guys in Maiden, Yngwie, Jake E. Lee, Richie Blackmore...Hendrix all make it sound heavier - because they can play that syle.

Same thing with an SG. It has been used by players as diverse as Duane Allman, Tony Iommi, Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia, Angus Young, Peter Townshend, Eric Clapton, and ten thousand heavy metal/punk/thrash players who can't shell out the $$$ for a Les Paul.

The pluses to me are the fret access, and it just fits perfectly to my body/hands. Nothing in the world like it. But people say that about their favorite guitar be it a Les Paul, Strat, PRS, Tele... whatever.

I think people get too caught up in rules and what is accepted and popular. I can get amazing clean tones, slightly dirty tones, and crunchy ass fat heaviness all from an SG. Or a Strat. It's all in your hands, and musical soul.

Play a whole bunch of different guitars through a good amp. You'll like some more than others. Get the one you like in your price range. Period. :D

H is a nickname used by Maidenfans for Adrian Smith. Heard of him? :laugh2:

yeah of course, just never as "H" before. only maiden fans around where i live is me and a friend of mine though. havent been to their message board or anything

Re: Considering an SG. Help!?

definitely don't get an SG if you're after more of a les paul tone.

but SG's are sweet IMO. contrary to what someone said previously, i think they make great guitars to use live because they're nice and light. and as previously stated, they can do pretty much anything, depending on the pickups. but anything rock-oriented, no problem.

I was kidding man. Well now you know. H is all over the message board, you'd probably be lost not knowing that if you were to go there.

He makes it sound good. Adrian isn't what I'd call a "shredder" though. He uses more vibratos and solos that just fit the part and sound amazing. But the only SG I've liked is my old SG with a Super Distortion in the bridge, like Adrian's. It sounds KILLER.

so dont say that shredding on it sounds bad. it sounds diferent yes, due to the whole GUITAR sounding diferent, but if the shred is bad, then the guitarist cant shred worth a damn and that, is not the guitars fault

It just sounds a bit thin to me. The powerchords are epic with the SD in the bridge there, but I am just spoiled from soloing with hot rails in the neck :). Anything else just sounds thin and lacking now. It just doesn't sustain all that well.

then it's the pup, not the guitar ;)
