That's the only lp I would buy if I had to buy another. P90's make me swing my arm upright whenever I play an e chord. The in btw position is awesome. The neck is clear and warm w a hint of brightness. Of course, never buy anything from Gibson unless you try that exact one.

I just played gold top with p90s. I hated it. The neck pickup was twice as loud as the bridge pickup (came from the factory that way), and the whole foam under the pickup to adjust the height? Really? There is no better way than that in 2013? So since I hated it, It would make sense that you would too.

All I know is that whenever I have to ask someone to convince me of something, my heart isn't really in it. It may or may not suit your application. That is all there is to it in my book. You could do many things with the money...

That being said, if I was going to buy a les paul, I would probably buy an older one. Like pre 2003 or something. Either that, or I would buy a used Epi and mod the electronics and pickups and end up with something possibly rather RAGING@@!!!

You don't have to own everything that you can appreciate. If you'll ever be Eric Clapton or Joe Bonamassa, play a hundred shows a year and spend a lot of time in the studio - then yes, you can own every guitar you want to try. If you're not - how about focusing on the guitars you know you will play a lot?

Good advice. You've been thru a lot of guitars, and if you're still wrestling with owning an LP, you're not ready for one. It should come naturally, without reservation. LP's are warm and bassy, not what you want in a guitar. You'd only end up selling it. You're a Strat guy, why fight it? You posted a clip of you with a Strat a while ago and it sounded great. If you can do that with a Strat, why be looking at LP's?

I play a little erratically. I've seen plenty of Strats with pick marks on the upper horns so I know I'm not the only one. (Granted I don't let the pick touch the body, but my hand could hit the switch.)

I am with you on this. But I still feel I need to do something about it.

Andrew buy it, if you are gonna play it. I think you like strats a lot.

A couple years ago I was test driving Strats in a store. The store owner commented that I sounded like I should be playing a Les Paul (said store didn't sell Les Paul's and said comment should have cost him a lost sale).

I already owned a couple Les Paul's and I really wanted a Strat to round out my collection. I bought the best sounding one I played, got it home and wound up hating it, rarely played it, then finally gave it away to someone who'd actually get some use out of it.

What's the moral of this story? Some dudes can mange to play a wide variety of guitars and get all of them to sound great. I'm not one of those dudes and coming to that realization has saved me considerable money.

I dig that. That's a sweet looking LP. The few I handled were well built and sounded amazing. Good stuff.

You can buy it for me. My birthday is next month. Lol

No sense in spending money on something you're not 100% sure about.

I don't like how Les Pauls feel in my hands, I don't like how muddy they get, I don't....

I was in the same boat as you until I tried the '70s Tribute Les Paul. It has mini humbuckers, a maple neck, and a baked maple fretboard. All those changes made the Les Paul cut and sound crystal clear while retaining the vibe of a Les Paul. Truthfully, I play that guitar a lot and really love it. I did swap out the corian nut for a brass one and added a soapbar JB in the bridge, but it was a good guitar to start with. The stock neck pickup is glorious, as was the bridge but I wanted something hotter. Seriously, try a '70s Tribute before you rule out Les Pauls.

I have owned a few lp's and although they sounded great, I couldn't get used to the way they hang on me. Awkward at times. I ended up selling them off in favor of other brands and models.
Its not that I dislike them, there are just better guitars for me.

And yes, I also dislike the toggle placement.

Personally, I love the switch placement.

I usually can't stand the looks of a LP shaped guitar without the switch where it would be on a real Les Paul, too.

What has been getting to me lately is short scale guitars. Anything under 25.5" just sounds different, especially with big strings. I've been looking at longer scale guitars lately, and 7 strings. I don't particularly like the looks of P90s, either. However, I seem to dig the tone, most of the time.

Back on topic though, you seemed really happy when you had your SG. Maybe a LP with P90's and bigger pot values (1 meg maybe?) would be perfect.

+1. Most of us have preferences in guitars; some feel natural and sound great in our hands, others don't. It should be a conduit to reaching the next level, not an obstacle. Life's too short to struggle with a guitar that's not a good fit.

I love pointies & superstrats..but I think it's nice to have one LP-type guitar just for the sake of variety. It feels different/sounds different/plays different and all in a good way. The switch position is ok with me but gets in the way for tapping. I always hit the switch with my right forearm & it switches from bridge to neck. The solution ...only tap with the neck pup engaged, it sounds better anyway (or stick to playing the blues) :lmao:

Blueman has always liked to listen to Strats, in the right hands. Hey, I grew up on Hendrix. Not a guitar I care to own, but I've heard great things done with them. Problem is that many Strat players buy them with no clear idea as to why, and then have no idea how to EQ the darn things. In the blues world, so many are either shrill and piercing or a 'bee in a can.' Andrew posted a clip of his a while ago with a Strat; some nice playing and a great tone. He's one of the guys that's figured out how to EQ his. He has my blessings.

I think Andrew is still following his natural tone preferences with this one. After all it is P90 and he has expressed fondness for P90 many times.
