Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

They're plywood instead of hardwood, but here's a few that a friend of mine builds
Mesa Boogie MkV is mine, and the Single Rectifier next to it and the Road King in the picture below it are owned by the other guitarist in my band.

A Josh Skow custom-made Lone Star Special.

Very cool design that could be incorporated into most any amp.

I love the art deco flair.

The trick is it's a limited edition with a 12" Alnico speaker that gives it one of the finest classic tone of any amp have heard in a long time. It's gotta sound cool or it can't look cool can it?

how bout stuff that lights up in the front?
Would be a gimmick on a cheap amp, but on a tone machine, it works IMO

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

Watkins Dominator Mk.I ('V-front') ... 17 watts from 2 x EL84s, 2 x 10" speakers, often Celestions. The first amp I ever owned was one of these, back in 1969/70. It is said that the Marshall 18 watt circuit was taken from the Dominator.

Original ... (late 1950s/ early 1960s)

and the limited run of 'gold anniversary' Dominators (got my name on the list to get one of these)

Is this cool?
I was thinking, unplug the light and paint it black... but may be I'm not cool.

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

For those with some of these cool-looking amps... do they sound as good as they look?

I play the Excelsior more than any amp I own. Seeing it is bare-bones, no tone control, you have to rely on your technique to coax tone out of it. Your picking dynamics and attack are important playing this amp. If you get it to around 11 o'clock you get a very cool tube break up and the amp sings. The Excelsior is a very fun amp to play and it LOVES a good boost pedal or hot pickups in front of it. I would kill for a 50-watt head version of this amp for gigging.
