Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

Seeing these giant amps makes me sort of happy that I don't perform with one anymore (most of the time).

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

To me nothing looks cooler than a JCM800 2205 Halfstack or a cool Spawn Halfstack. I used to have a Marshall with cane colored grill cloth, like Bogner, that Scott Spawn did for me when I lived in Charlotte. I like the Bogner look a lot too. I don't have access to my old pics right now, so I can't show you the one I had. Here are some I like.

@ $750 it is cool enough looking to qualify...the name brand is also cool.

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

70 posts without mention of the old Ampeg Portaflex line of guitar and bass amps. I am disappoint.

Very nice. I like most Ampegs, I even have one of their old combos for guitar. This one was only $700 used and it out performs some amps in the $1500+ range:

What's the matter with you guys? Four pages, and no one has mentioned 3 Monkeys?

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

On the vintage end of things, we have the Univox "Group B" amps of the early '70s.

And of course, my more reasonably-sized DIY tribute to same:

It took a lot of willpower to not quote every post in this thread. :D

But I love the Marshall 18-Watt, and all its clones.

That Portaflex is a modern non-flip-top cab (either the 1x15 LF or the 4x10), and what looks like a repro amp on top (because of its extreme cleanliness).

That guitar amp is a recent one from the failed GVT line, perhaps 5 or 6 years old. While technically true in that it is discontinued, I would not call it an "old" model. I liked them a lot, but they didn't do anything that my four other Ampeg guitar amps didn't, so I didn't jump on them. I regret that sometimes.

These are examples of the old Portaflexes I was talking about:

B12-XT guitar amp (there was a 4x12 version of this as well; they are like hen's teeth).

The B15 bass amps are the ones most people know, but there were all kinds for guitar and bass, with speakers from 12" to 18", and even some as large as this.

P.S. I assume you already know that on a Portaflex, the head is mounted to the top panel of the cabinet, and the entire panel is unlatched and flipped for storage, placing the amp hanging upside down inside the cab.

I love interesting tolex colors...or when 2 or more interesting colors are combined.

In the 60's , D.U. we had " Goldentone " amps that came in many configurations. Some had the head that flipped inside the cabinet for storage and transporting.

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

So: Six triple stacks. 18 cabs total. Qty: 72 x 12-inch speakers.
A couple questions come to mind.

Which band was this for?
How much of it was used in concert at once?
Assuming it was more than a full stack: what did it sound like.

I know Johnny Ramone used 3 100-watt Marshalls at most gigs, two for his side of the stage, one for the bass players side.

Re: Coolest Looking Amplifiers?

Those are just dummies. It's pretty common for those walls of stacks to be just stage props.

That doesn't stop them from being cool-looking, though.
