Crazy loud G string

Hello everyone. Wonder is someone on this forum might know the cause of this problem: I installed a Seymour Duncan SM1-N Vintage Mini Humbucker in the neck position of a telecaster (Squier Classic Custom Vibe). I have a SD Lil' 59 in the bridge. With the the SM-1, the G string is much louder than all the others. No similar issue with the Lil '59. There is no way to adjust pole pieces, etc. Is this possibly a capacitor issue?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.

I am assuming here that the original neck pickup didn't have the issue, and its only the new pickup.

It is odd that its only that pickup, and that string. Anything on the guitar that would be an issue would exhibit symptoms across the board....as likely as not.
I'm guessing you have just got one of those 'perfect storm' issues......where the location of the pickup, that particular guitar and that particular pickup all combine to make the balance of frequencies the G string puts out to be so much more strong than any other.
Messing with height is my only advice......you might find you can get to a better balance with adjustment

Re: Crazy loud G string

I agree, it's probably just a peak in the pickup response coinciding with a peak in the guitar's natural sound, perhaps especially in that particular spot.

I'd try lowering the pickup. A lot. As in flush-with-the-pickguard low. That might help even out the string balance. Being a Firebird type pickup, it should still be plenty loud. If that helps, then you can experiment with raising it incrementally as far as you can without the problem resurfacing.

Re: Crazy loud G string

A plain G is, magnetically, the strongest string on an electric guitar. I would guess that the different e.q. of the new pickup just happens to accentuate this in a way that your old pickup hid more.

If it's a huge deal, try a thinner G. That'll help a little bit, though not a ton. If you can deal with a wound G with your style of playing, then try that. It will have a dramatic affect on the volume of that string. Try different types of string sets too.
