Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

I got a super cheap (price) early 90's Fender MIM Strat because some kid wanted to change the color and decided to use a grinder to remove the paint...thankfully he started on the back side lol Was one of the nicest playing MIM's I've had.

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

The dumbest things I did when I was 16 - 19.....
I scalloped a fretboard and had it turn out about the same as the one pictured above.
I sprayed a custom ESP body with Flecktone faux concrete finish from the art store. Every time I played it, pieces of the finish flaked off.

One of the worst things I've seen someone else do in the late 80's was spraypaint a sunburst 1950's Strat neon green and install a Kahler trem system. He couldn't find a luthier to do it, so he did it himself with a rattle can, and the routing under the Kahler was done with a chisel.

Look up the current market value of a 54 - 57 Stratocaster, and you'll see what an expensive mistake that idiot has had to live with.

Then you get muppets who think they are cool and do this to a guitar :

Meh. Guitars are meant to be played. I'd rather see vintage instruments destroyed by people who were using them to make music than see mint condition guitars sold from one collector to another ad infinitum.

I'd rather see vintage instruments played by people who appreciate them for what they are. Got an old Strat but you wish it was an Ibanez? I'm sure there are people lined up around the block who'd trade a rainbow of neon, locking system equipped RGs or Sabres for that Fender.

Yeah if you're going to punch a guitar full of holes, it might as well be an Epi Studio LP. Those things cost like $150.

These two responses are classic. (In a good way.)

It reminds me of an old car magazine, giving tips on DIY'ing your car problems.

Step #4: Always take the old part with you to the auto parts store.
Step #5: Never remove the old part before you have the new part in your hands.

:D

I scalloped a few frets off a fretboard. Usable, but ugly. Then I went ahead and badly paint blood splatter over it.

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

Early on I tuned a cheap acoustic an octave too high
In the middle of the night
A loud pop as the bridge flew off

I always check the 12th fret octave when I tune now

Always

I'm surprised that the bridge wasn't weaponized while you were tuning it!

Yeah, I don't mind if a 50's Strat is beat to hell because of a lifetime of good playing, but I'm not a fan of modifying a 50's strat to do something a modern Ibby, Jackson, ESP or whatever will do for much less and much better.

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

Years back, when I was first learning to play, one of the local shredders that bummed around the guitar shop where I was taking lessons took a belt sander to a perfectly good Les Paul sunburst. He beveled the top edge to make it more comfortable for his forearm to rest on. He was used to playing various super-strats...

Second, saw what I thought was PRS on the used rack at the same store (this is 1993). Some guy had tried to repaint one using a rattle can. I don't think he removed the original finish, or sanded, or shook the can.

This reminded me, my first bass was a ric 4003 that some jack wagon had painted purple. Strings, pickups and all. I don't remember how much my Mom paid for it, but since she paid for it I'm sure it was really cheap. I traded it in at a pawn shop later on, but I never really cleaned it up, just the frets and changed the strings.
