CTN builds a Star

Re: CTN builds a Star

The riser is a bad idea, IMO - otherwise looks great. I'd have gone with an intonatable wraparound for the bridge.

Re: CTN builds a Star

care to elaborate on why you think it's a bad idea? functionally bad or just visually?

Re: CTN builds a Star

Most definitely visually, but also that looks like a fairly steep angle coming off that to the bridge and that can cause tuning issues if there is string contact along the backside of the bridge.

Re: CTN builds a Star

If you're set on using one, I'd have it be more elongated on the bass side to harmonize visually with the larger bass side horn. It would look something like a check mark.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Ah well, can't please everyone. I'm fine with the look of it personally. I had made up another one that was somewhat more check mark shaped, and it just looked awkward and stood out far too much. This design is simpler, more subtle and to my eyes, looks better. After it's all painted, it won't stand out as much seeing as it'll be the same colour as the rest of the body, so it'll essentially become a non-issue.

as for the functionality aspect, the string angle was steep, which is why I made the riser in the first place, to solve that issue.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Got some stuff for the case today... black vinyl for the outside and black fluffy velour-ish type stuff for the inside. Also got some fabric glue.

next up, I gotta get the structural components of the case and the foam padding

I also decided to do a CTN logo on the case which I'll most likely paint on with enamel paints so it's more durable than lacquer. Gotta make a stencil for that.

Also, I was planning on starting paint this week, but I realized that I can't. I'm waiting for the decal, which I probably won't get this coming week, unless I get lucky. so instead, I'll work on the case this week, then next week I can do the paint, cure a couple weeks, wet sand, buff, polish and should be good to go for the 25th.

Killer headstock. Blows away a lot of production models.

Don't mind the loook of the riser, but would wood hold the force of skinny strings over time or wear grooves?

I have front ferrules that'll go into those holes on the riser. The riser (as the name might imply) was just to add some height to the ferrules so that it'd set up nicely without any chance of the strings hitting the back edge of the bridge.

Re: CTN builds a Star

On a side note, I am partially fokked.

My local home depot had literally half the things I needed for the case. Out of 5 different structural items, they had 1. Fortunately, they had all the foam padding I needed.

Ugh. Now I gotta go find the other bits at other HD stores and or Lowe's or Rona (Canadian chain, similar to HD).

I'm scared now! Whats all this about a forbidden riser?

It will look fine imo, i actually want a guitar with one now damn it.

ah, I see. yeah, I think it'll look cool.

It's not forbidden. It got approved by the CTN internal design specifications oversight committee and went into production.

On a side note, I found sources for the other stuff on my list. Will be slightly more of a pain in the ass to get em, but at least now I can get them. Perhaps I'll put up some pics of the fabric tomorrow.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Looking great, sir. Keep up the good work, and I love this thread. People that can pull this off amaze me.

Re: CTN builds a Star

pull what off? a slightly more involved basic assembly and a finish?

I'm more amazed by people who can do this stuff from scratch and not screw anything up! Like Crusty's red LP build for example...that was impressive.

what I'm doing is pretty simple, all things considered...I took most of the really difficult work out of the equation by ordering the body and neck ready made.

I like the fact that you're posting humbly, but this is really solid-looking work. I hope it sounds phenomenal and plays just as well.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Question: Have you string it up to make sure the neck angle works with the height of the TOM bridge? From the initial pics, it didn't look like your neck pocket was angled enough to compensate for the height and angle of the strings coming off the TOM so you can get the action right. If the neck pocket is not angled enough, then look in to recessing the bridge in to the body like Warmoth offers and Jackson does on some of their guitars with that kind of setup. You won't need that riser either.

Also, for the neck screws, no need to bushings like that. Use some flat washers that fit in the hole that the screw would then rest on. You'll get the recessed neck screws and it'll be a lot smoother. Smoothing out the top edges of the recess will look good too. Check out some Ibanez models for examples of this. They do it a lot.

Excellent job on everything else. It looks great. The head stock came out well.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Tuners and the remaining guitar parts arrived today so I'll see about getting it strung up tonight or tomorrow.

As for the neck pocket...it was routed with an angle by mitch at KNE. From all reports I've seen, his work is excellent so I'll have to trust that he routed in the correct angle...until I string it up.

I like the neck ferrules/bushings just like they are! :p The countersink in the bushings holds the screws nice and snug and hides the screw heads. The tops of the bushings poke out a bit, but it's not a big deal because they're rounded anyway.

Thanks for the feedback!

String it up next step and don't go any further until you do. I've done 3 assemblies and one was a set neck SG Jr. Dry fitting everything before paint complete with strings was one of the most important steps before going forward. Gives you time to work out any issues before painting it if there are any.
