Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

Pierre

Stratologist
Basically I'm looking for the following:
TIGHT bass, and if possible overall sound too. I didn't like this AirZone openness.
A LOT of mids (and I do mean a lot...), maybe at least 7 or 8 on a scale of 1 to 10.
Singing highs, a bit like the AirZone/JB which seem to have a great lead sound. The AZ did at least but lacked output and tightness. And even in a maple neck through guitar I found it dark...
Quite a bright sound (resonant peak around 5.5/6khz? I don't know if DiMarzio and other brand use the same measurements for that)
Output should be close to 14 or 15, up to 18 maybe on the Seymour Duncan scale (obviously you can't compare by the numbers, but just by how much X pickup distorts what amp, etc...).
The guitars would be a Basswood Super Strat or a maple neck through Kramer Stagemaster, both Floyded. It's more curiosity than wanting to buy though ;) So feel free to mention anything.

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

Well I'm already addicted to the Custom and the FullShred with a Ceramic magnet, I was expecting other brands :laugh2: But thanks ;) The SH6 is definitely on my list. That and a SH6/SH5 custom with adjustable hex screws... :32:

Ah... Francais toi aussi?

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

The good thing with sh6 is that it is thick , lots of mids , sweet treebles with harmonics, and tight but present bass .
Like it but prefer the Demon witch is less thick and more articulate for speed .

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

You'd like the FullShred I think. Hotter than the Demon, more articulate and tighter.

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

Dimarzio Evolution.

It is very loud, VERY tight and has powerful highs. It is more of a screamer than a singer. It is an extremely articulate pickup.

Regarding mids: The tone chart doesn't illustrate that there is a certain mid-frequency boost--an upper mid spike. Yes, it cuts through very, very well.

I'd rather have a singer though to be honest. The FS and the Custom are more on the screamer side, though maybe a bit smoother than you make the Evo to be. I'd be sure to try one out someday though thanks ;)

Any other DMs for me?

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

+1. I'm on the Demon side too. I like the tightness, sensitivity and snarl of this pickup but I also like the deepness of its unique hi-fi paf tone. It also controls high gain very well.

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

The Dimarzio Breed and Air Zone, Evolution is very tight
Lawrence 500XL
EMG's are tight - 81 85 set

You can't lose on the JB/Jazz set, or the Custom/Jazz. Duncan Distortion.

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

The Tone Zone has huge mids. And the air norton in the neck is great too.

I just sold an AirZone. About the less tight pickup I ever heard dude, no offence :laugh2: Same for the TZ, I don't like it much. Sure the TZ sounds HUGE, but it's way too open and big for me. I like something a bit less huge and more 'compressed' in tone if you see what I mean.
I think I should try the Breed and Evo... And the BL500XL is on my list already :D Thanks!

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

I dunno, open doesn't really apply to the TZ in my experience...To me it has a great bottom and lots of thick mids.....mids != open in my deduction.

But regardless, you mentioned not liking it......Perhaps the Steve's Special is more up your alley.

What kind of music is this for?

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

Mostly high gain application, but versatility is a plus, though not a requirement.
The Custom is almost perfect for me. But I'm still looking for similar pickups, but with different voicings. Tightness and loads of mids are a requirement.

Steve's Special has scooped mids no? Furthermore I like a pup that can OD an amp a lot.

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

Hey Pierre, I agree with you on Steve's Special. It looks hi-gain (+17K) but it isn't really. There's neither lots of gain, nor mids. it's really cold sounding to me. but again, it's cool in a way.

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

talking Dimarzio: if you want to OD an amp a lot get the Tone Zone. the TZ i found to be a lot more aggressive and crunchier than the Custom. if you want something that's a lot more aggressive than the Duncan Distortion... Evo all the way! plus the harmonics are EMG-like with the Evo's... it screaaaamms!

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

AHHHHH the TZ is my worse nightmare :laugh2: Sorry dude ;) I just can't stand the thing. It's about as untight as it comes. I had an AZ in a guitar, it didn't stay there 3 days. Good pickup it was for sure, just not my taste at all. The TZ is similar I think, but hotter. I tried it out sometimes and meh... Eh maybe someday my tastes will change. Thanks ;)

So the list so far includes the BL500XL and the DM Evolution

Re: Curious about DiMarzios and other brands. What pickups for me?

Pierre, don´t get the steves special. its a crappy. hahahahahahaah
if you will go Evolution, and if your body wood is medium to Bright sounding wood, i suggest to try the EVO 2 first. i had the evolution, and theres a little Annoying high spike or middy/high spike there.
in some guitars .. it´s getting annoying. in others, maybe not.
i´ll try 3 dimarzio combos.
evo 2/paf pro
evo 2/paf joe
Hails
