Curious about the Boss PS-6 Harmonist

I haven't had a chance to try the Boss PS-6 Harmonist, but I need a good harmonizer in that price range (if that's possible). Anyone with personal experience with one of these? I've heard some decent demos of this thing, and I've heard some slightly questionable ones.

Re: Curious about the Boss PS-6 Harmonist

they are decent pedals, i used one in the store before buying my whammy(which i later returned), Watch the PGS demo, it demo's it nicely and gives an overview of the features if you dont have a chance to try it out, i dont know for certain how well it reacts with chords, but andy may cover that in the video, if you are into weirder stuff as well might as well look at the whammy, i dont really have a use for a harmonizer thats why i returned it, just thought it was a creative tool to have, but if you need a harmonizer i would just go to a store and try them out, thats the only way to know for sure, and if you cant, order both (if youre interested in the whammy) and return the one you like less

Yeah man, I'm a PGS junkie! LOL. I actually tried a Whammy before at Guitar Center and HATED it. I was not impressed with it at all. Everyone I know who gets one ends up returning it or selling it to someone else, haha. All I really need a harmonizer for is to get some dual guitar leads going over the rhythm parts when my band plays live, since that's impossible to replicate unless we get a 3rd guitarist, which is NOT practical for us. As long as it can do those cool major and minor 3rds like Boston, Thin Lizzy or Iron Maiden without glitching, I'm satisfied. Hehe. From the PGS demo, since the 1st thing Andy plays is a Boston song, so that's reassuring. I watched that video as soon as PGS released it actually, which is what got me wanting a PS-6 in the first place. I never liked the demos I saw of the PS-5, but this new PS-6 seems to be much better.

idk I thought they were uber cool I really want one idk how much I'll end up using it when I get it but that's aside from the point

YOU DONT WATCH PGS VIDEOS? you need to take a serious look at how you've been auditioning pedals you cant try out, and also, for just harmonizing leads, the harmonist just work great, simple, small, try it out, you will most likely love it

Are PGS gear demos the best on these Interwebs? I think so.
Andy is a terrific presenter and one hell of a guitar player, too.

Re: Curious about the Boss PS-6 Harmonist

I don't really use the harmony modes... but I love the s-bend mode. It's a controlled whammy up/down effect.

I have to be careful not to over use that effect or the guys I play with might get sick of it, haha. Very fun, especially with delay.

As an aside, I recall thinking that I prefer the harmony modes when the pedal is placed after distortion, but thinking the s-bend mode sounds smoother and less harsh when the pedal is placed before distortion.

Yeah man, I have a good feeling this might be that one mystery pedal I've been missing. Thanks for the tips! Now, I'm on a mission to try one of these out. :)

Wow, that is interesting! So for harmony modes, I'd benefit most from placing this in my effects loop then, right?

Yes. Harmony mode sounds muddy and noisy before distortion, but after distortion it sounds good. I was surprised when I discovered this.

Re: Curious about the Boss PS-6 Harmonist

Have you tried rocking out a "natural" harmony? Instead of investing in a Harmonizer pedal, invest in a looper ala DL4, lay down the lead and harmonize over it.

Re: Curious about the Boss PS-6 Harmonist

I had one for a while and I noticed a slight delay in harmony mode. Really did not sound good to me for that at all. Super bend and the detune was cool, but I eventually sold it. I use a delay with a long time for harmony now. I dig it a lot more for my style.

That's a good concept, and that's actually how I tend to work out a lot of dual guitar parts when I'm writing them at home, but in the context of playing the type of songs that I play with my band, I really need instant harmonies. Good suggestion though. I can see how that would work in many instances. :)
