Curious - how many folks have paying gigs?

Re: Curious - how many folks have paying gigs?

My band played about 6 shows before we decided to part ways with our singer and rhythm guitarist. So now we're stuck without a good portion of our band and can't find anyone else at the moment. But 4 of the 6 gigs were free, 2 of them were competitions, of which we won 1. I just enjoy playing out, and with more experience, more talent, and more drive, paying gigs will come.

I dissolved my working show band at the first of this last year, but my drummer is reluctant to let it die, so I still keep getting jobs. I don't even get the guitar out of the case for less than $100 for the evening.

Amen to that.

I think a lot of bar folk don't seem to understand how much work and money it takes to keep a good band going. A gig for us that is an hour away from home entails about 10 hours of work. My skills are worth a heck of a lot more than 10 dollars an hour.

I think a lot of patrons are in the dark here too. They whine at the door when there's a 2 dollar cover charge....but they will spend 25-100 bucks on drinks and stuff once inside....tip the bartender 20% but wouldn't dream of tipping the band after rocking out all night even after they tell you "man you guys are awsome!!!!"

Re: Curious - how many folks have paying gigs?

its all down to how many bands there are in the area. where i play (croydon, SW london ish, england), theres bands left right and centre. clubs play 3 youth bands a night, and hardly ever pay them because there's simple so many of them. there was one time my band (i do bass and vocals) did a double set because a band pulled out, and we got £40. between 4 of us. great.

i've gotten to the stage where if i get my bus fare there back, i'm cool with it. you dont even get free drinks in the damned place.
