Wooden board covered in Velcro was about $15. Patch cables were about $35 for a pack of planet waves. Crybaby $80, nady pitchfork tuner $40, line 6 G50 wireless $350, boss ns2 $100. In all, around $620. I badly need a power supply, I'm running on a crappy 1-spot thing my friend gave me.

I look at the Multi Effects units offered today and none of them are better then a custom built by you pedal board.

So what do you guys think ?

My Fractal AX8 has stopped me looking at individual pedals for a long time. I can usually virtually 'build' what I want in there, and I am really happy with it.

I wouldn't worry about it - mine is genuinely stupid. It does need a bit of rationalising to be fair.

Chris, whats make your board stupid?

One of 3 complete boards. I cannot duplicate the tone of this setup with a digital device. I could happily get through most gigs with one though. There is no digital equivalent or alternative to some of my pedals.

I heard very good things about the AX8. Not sure how close it sounds to analog gear but the main attraction with separate pedals is the specific character it has over the general sound of a digital pedal board. A real Ibanez tube screamer or Boss Waza chorus has a certain sound that the standard type of chorus does not. For that reason I prefer separate pedals. The Catalina chorus for instance has a specific lush analog character with its dynamic control that I just love. Their Vapor Trail bucket delay is another speciality sound I don't want to be without. But I know many top guitarist like the AX8.

For the board itself, $15-$20. It's a cutting board that I put velcro on and rubber feet.

I have probably accumulated a few grand between pedals, multis, cables and power supplies. Though it's taken me 8 years to do so.

I used separate pedals for years. In the Fractal, you can sort of 'build' any pedal you really want. I do find myself playing a lot more now rather than looking at videos of new pedals. My sound is pretty basic, actually. It is the technique that makes it mine. BTW, I use a Pedaltrain Fly, which is a really-not-well-known model, that comes with a super deluxe soft case. Their normal soft cases dissolve on me after a year, and the hard cases are too heavy.

Hey man, we can't use all of it all of the time. (In town) I often gig with only guitar-cable-amp for jump and blues stuff and I can gig with 1 OD and a delay for most everything else. Touring is different. A larger board is needed mostly for guitar changes.

10k easily here in effects and even with multiple boards many only get used once in a while and a bunch are put away. I personally find it valuable and rewarding (and most of all enjoyable and fun) to have them on hand. Can't use them if I don't have them. In my opinion gear is something to be used for all it's coolness, one-off-ness, uniqueness, sameness, and function. If music gear were only about function the industry would wilt and die.

It's easier to build a collection of pedals one at a time as you develop as a player, and most semi-pro or even pro players don't need a ton of effects. I think your whole argument is fundamentally flawed... you don't NEED a pedalboard with a case, fancy power supply, and a bunch of different sounds to play an electric guitar. You don't NEED a Mustang to drive to work. But if you enjoy it and you can afford it you might as well go for it.

You need whatever it takes to create your music dude. There is no such thing as " You don't need".
But if you must know what I use , here it is.
1) OD pedals
2) Tuner
3) Octa Pedal
4) Delay
5) Reverb
6) Chorus
7) Volume Pedal
I really don't use anything else so I'm very simple. I do need control over all that so I can switch Amp channels and effects with one stomp and not have to do everything manually. I write what seems to be a lot of songs that Use Reverb and chorus with Delay with clean and then OD amp distortion with Delay for the Dirty channel within the same song. I'll switch back and forth to these to settings during a song. It would sound like ass if I had to change all that myself.

How is the Free the tone?

It is a basic high-end switcher. My preferred gear type - a well made fundamental. It's simple, it's small and it sounds fantastic. Very transparent and musical. It allows me to work my board as if I only had 4 pedals.

No control. That might have to change, though.

Hey bro, If I had any bigger board or alot of effects I would consider the Boss ES-8. The feature set is incredible. It is proving to be a real alternative to the Mastermind (and even the GigRig to a slight degree)
