Custom 5 With A Floyd?

Anyone tried/using a Custom 5 in an alder bodied Strat-style with a Floyd Rose? Too much treble? Scooped mids? Does it clean up well when backed off? I guess I'm looking for a A5-type PAF sound, but slightly hotter (not distorted) than a regular '59. I'm looking to get the best sound close to EVH without going to the EVH Custom.

Thanks
Chris

Iv got a buddy with a alder H-S-S Jackson with a C5 and 2 Hot Stacks and that sucker smokes. I can get the EVH tone with my Custom.

Yep, my alder bodied Jackson has a C5 in the bridge and it rocks, although I still prefer a lower output pu for VH tones.

Does that take us back to the 59b? I guess from what I'm reading from a search of previous threads is the 59b, perhaps with an A3?

What about a Dimarzio Air Classic? Anyone with experience and opinions?

Racerx-
Can you describe/explain the EVH tone you are getting with the Custom? Is it a more 'scooped mids' sound from earlier days or more mid-rangy like the later stuff?

I used to have one in a basswood Wolfgang, and I found it to be too bright, too bassy, and too scooped in the mids. The C5 is a great pickup in the right guitar, but I would stay away from it in a brighter sounding guitar. If you want an EVH tone with a bit more output than a PAF, try putting an alnico 3 magnet in a Screamin' Demon. Or go with a Blues Trembucker, it's my favorite bridge pickup in the Duncan lineup.

Chris,

I play a U.S. Strat Ultra w/ a Dimarzio Air Classic through a 5150. I do not like the Air Classic. It sounds good for leads, but ut is not a good rythm or clean pickup, I just don't dig the tone.

I'm currently in your boat, looking for a new bridge pu., and it definitely needs to cover Van Halen territory (as well as other rock styles). I am leaning towards the 59b trembucker for many of the reasons you mention reading about.

Re: Custom 5 With A Floyd?

i have installed a c5 in my alder bodied floyd rose equipped guitar and what i found is that while i like the sound i get with it when practicing alone at home, when i use it with my band it does get lost in the mix.I think this is due to a certain lack of mid frequencies.I had previously used the CC and have noticed exactly the opposite thing:when practising i didn't enjoyed it as much as the c5 but in a band situation it was better than the c5.I also find the c5 to have a better bass responce than the CC but it doesn't have the mids that a strat needs to have.
