Custom ain't cutting it!

I currently have a SD Custom in my Hohner Les Paul n which I have dropped down 1/2 a step and use 11-52 strings. I'm finding it sounds very muddy(if you can believe) to my other LP's which have a JB and a Distortion in the bridge position and are tuned regular and have 10-48 strings. I'm looking for a brighter and not as bass heavy pup that will cut through alot better. I can't honestly remember if I tried a JB in it. I'm obviously thinking JB or Distortion. Any suggestions?

Cheers Primo.

JB's pretty much cut through anything IMO....sometimes even a little too good in certain guitars. I think the JB would be a good alternative to the Custom if you're looking for something brighter with less low mids.

Re: Custom ain't cutting it!

Do you mean the low and mid tones, kind of mush togethter in a brittle kind of way that is not as smooth as it could be? I have that same problem, only when i drop the tuning i.e say to d it starts getting less smooth and more grainy in the lower registers, this has led me to never using dropped tunings with the custom, i resort to my sg to do the heavy stuff that has a breed. Also my guitar with the custom has a tremelo which kind of puts of a metalic edge not good if you want solid and meaty lows like my sg, which is the exact opposite. I could never imagine the custom sounding like that in a lespaul though, i would think it would sound killer in that position.

I, personally don't have that problem with my SH-5, and that's in a Paul! Maybe it's the height of the pickup...have you checked that?

I would give the Pearly Gates a try for the tone you are looking for.

Re: Custom ain't cutting it!

I personally think the JB is to trebley and not bassy enough myself, however, I think the JB would be the wisest choice for the kind of sound your lookin for. I just have a feeling that your gonna find that the Duncan Distortion is also to bassy for your taste. I could be wrong, but If i were you I'd check out the JB next.

Re: Custom ain't cutting it!

Thanks for the responses!!! The PG could be the ticket. I'm looking for a tone similar to my other LP's, but at the same time using heaier guage strings and having tuned down 1/2 step is definately going to change the tone as well as the volume(I don't want to lower the pup, so maybe a lower output pup may work). Looking at the tone charts, a Scremin' Demon sounds intreging as well. Anybody try a S D?

Cheers Primo.

Re: Custom ain't cutting it!

Are you using quality 500k pots? I've used the Custom in my Les Pauls tuned down to C with no mud whatsoever.

Re: Custom ain't cutting it!

Yeah, I was consdering that too! I'll definately have to check.
