Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

Ok, I'm looking to change the bridge pickup in my Les Paul Classic. I thought I was settled on the Custom Custom until I looked at the Duncan Tone Chart. Which confused the hell out of me. According to it, the CC doesn't have that much bass. Which is wierd, because a few years ago I had a CC in a Floyd Strat- and I remember it being very warm sounding. According to the SH-11 discription, it can be used to tame bright guitars... ? What gives?

I want to "tame" the highs on my Lester. Will the CC do the trick? I'm looking for a creamy sounding pickup, that still retains some definition and balls. Will the CC fit this bill?

By the way, there is a A2 in the neck position. The CC and A2 should pare well, correct? Thanks for the help guys!

Don't go by the tone chart for that pickup. It will fit the bill. There's more bass than what the tone chart says, just not as much as others in its class like the Custom and C5. The rolled off highs will tame your Lester real nice but it'll remain punchy and full, thanks to the increased mids. I've used it in a LP myself and it's incredible. It works well with A2 or A5 neck pickups actually.

Thanks Erik! That's what I thought, but I just wanted to hear it from someone else.... makes me think I'm not going crazy. lol!

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

We're all crazy around here actually. :D There's quite a few of us that have used and still use the CC in a Les Paul. I woul've kept it in mine but my Frankenstrat wanted it back and I had gotten a Custom Shop pickup for the LP.

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

Which has more bass then, the CC or the Custom? I'm looking to put the Custom in the bridge of my LP but if it's going to be really bassy I don't know if that's the one. I want it to scream without having quite the highs of a JB. The JB rocks in my super strat though. Suggestions?

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

The Custom has more bass than the CC. It's tighter and more focused too. The CC's bass is looser, on the edge of being too loose but not flabby. It's just right IMO. If your amp/cab has good bass response, then there's no need to worry about using the CC.

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

My cabinet has plenty of bass. So perhaps the CC is a better option...does it match well with a '59 in the neck? If not, I may have to re-think this whole thing.

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

With that cab, if that's the one in your sig, then the CC will be fine. I've matched it up with a Jazz, which is an A5 pickup like the '59, and it worked great. The '59 would be OK. If it turns out to be too boomy, which some people don't like about it in the neck, then go with the Pearly Gates neck. That is probably the most popular neck pickup around here.

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

Thanks a bunch. I always liked that cabinet because it has a lot of low end, and seemed to work well with my strat (all because of the JB). Looks like the CC is the way to go. I'll have to decide on the '59 situation now. Thanks again!

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

That friggin' tone chart scared me off of the Custom Custom for years until I finally tried one on a lark and now its my favorite LP pickup. The CC has plenty of bass and attack regardless of the impression given by the tone chart. And if you get it in your LP and you hate it, just let me know and I'll buy it from you.:)

Re: Custom Custon for my Les Paul?

cc... so far it's the pickup that gets me closest to the sound i want out of my LP, which is really brite (lite option with an ebony board). the mids just sing and there is a nice amount of aggressiveness on the top end. plus... my LP has the Miii switching and the tapped CC sounds very good... my rig has a lot of headroom and bottom, so the slightly loose bottom end doesn't bother me much. however from all my experiences, the CC has quite a bit less bottom than a Custom, C5, '59, PG+, A2P etc... i actually had to lower the bass side of my PGn to reduce the amount of bottom end from the neck...
