I could not disagree more. A friend of mine, back in the '80s, played what I can only describe as "shred," although it wasn't metal. It was more like Rock/Punk Shred. In terms of speed, he was right up there with Steve Morse. And he played, you guessed it, a hollow-body Gretsch. And other than being packed with foam, it was stock. It was a very sweet guitar.

So the idea that all you can play on a gretsch is rockabilly and swing a la B.S. is, IMO, BS.

I'm agnostic on that opinion. However the DiMarzio Eric Johnson humbuckers for his Les Paul are supposed to be humbucker sized versions of the Gretsch pickups. Has anyone here tried those humbuckers? If so are they any good?

Purrrrrr- dee !
ya knw what would sound good on that would be Vintage 60's -70's Rick-Toster Tops in a P-90 cover!

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

I've owned 2 late 60's Gretsch Tennessean's and they both had HiLoTron pickups, never had a problem getting amazing heavy sounds. They feedback but were very controllable depending on where you stood, it was almost like a theremin!
That is when I realized the effect of having a clean lower output pickup. When playing with a distorted preamp, lower powered pickups let the notes ring alot more so as to hear individual notes when bashing out power chords!

Sounds like a sweet axe Scott!

P90s are the ****. There doesn't need to be many flavors. I think Gibson had it right back in the 50s and it should stay that way ;)

Re: Custom Shop Order for Scott_F

i always wondered how those filtertrons sounded and felt. I wonder how they'd sound in my strat!?
