Re: D-Tar Mama Bear

Lew & I saw the Mama Bear demoed at NAMM a couple of years ago. Very impressive -- in fact, I think he ended up with one.

Re: D-Tar Mama Bear

I have one and I absolutely love it. I just bought an Ovation Elite LX with the OP-Pro preamp and I use the ceramic pezio (#4) setting for the preamp neutralization. I haven't checked out all of the 256 possible settings yet but everything I have tried off of #4 has sounded killer through my ProTools rig. The rosewood settings sound very Martin and the resonator setting is very cool as well.

It is probably one of the slickest pieces of gear that I have aquired in a long time.

Re: D-Tar Mama Bear

Dude? Those have their own forum... it's like... racism.

It is a forum for the entire DTar line. The Solstice, Equinox, Momma Bear as well as the DTar line of acoustic mics. They have a new dual source product coming out as well.

Rick Turner is one heck of a cool guy and knows endless stuff about acoustics and acoustic tone so feel free to head over there and pick his brains!

Nice! I've thought about getting one considering that OP Pro preamp is decent, but not amazing.

I don't have any issues with the OP-Pro preamp and it sounds as good as the CoolTube preamp that was in my Tak or any of the other guitars I have tried receintly. Mostly the issue is with mics and preamps being able to correctly translate what happens inside an acoustic to make it sound like what you hear on the outside. The Momma bear normalizes that signal and with filters and digital modeling adds all the stuff that is missing back into the signal. It's a weak explanation and Rick is a better person to explain it but that is my understanding.

Whatever it does, it makes my recorded acoustic tones sound phenominal and offers many different and completely believable tones from one acoustic guitar.

Re: D-Tar Mama Bear

I'm wondering if experimentation involving a solid body electric through the Momma Bear would be worth-while. Any warnings against such a thing? Too hot of a signal causing overloading, etc?

Re: D-Tar Mama Bear

You can run any instrument through it. It is a digital modeling preamp with input and output level contriols so levels shouldn't be an issue. Some folks are running violins through them.

Rick is a big advocate of non-intended use for the Momma Bear. I have been thinking it might be a cool platform for bass tones. It might be cool to run keys through it as well.

Very cool. I'm surprised that Cool Tube preamp didn't sound better than the OP Pro too (those always looked pretty cool - I was thinking about picking up one of the higher end Takamines). Looks like I'll have to put that on my wish list.

Re: D-Tar Mama Bear

robert, how wet do you runs yours? .. i really prefer mine run darn near 100% wet ... it knocks out all the quack from the piezo bridge of my RMC bridge in the brian moore solid body electric ...

Alot of it may be what you are running the guitar through. I have some old clips of the Tak run through my Aphex 207 preamp into my ProTools rig so maybe I'll run the Ovation up next to it the same way and see how they compare. It may not be the Lamborgini of acoustic preamps but the OP-Pro seems to be a solid sounding preamp to my ears.

Looking at it now I have the blend at 10 0clock but I have tried it closer to max wet as well. It does get pretty fat sounding at 100% wet. I am still experimenting with it. I get killer solo tones easily but getting the guitar to sit in a mix is a completely different story and between the guitars EQ, the many tones available from the MBs settings and then the color added from the mix knob and what happens with the tone when you EQ and add effects in post there are far too many possibilities for me to be certain about anything this early in the game.

The MB does turn boxy into foxy with a quickness though, that I know!
