Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

Gear Ho
This sniper got sniped by a sniper. :laugh2: Oh well, it saved me some money, but I just about got this Gibson Goldtone 30 head for less than $750. I proxy bidded $736.66 40 seconds before the end. Someone else used Esnipe and took it with a much higher proxy.

I was getting greedy for Goldtones. I picked up my GA-30RVS combo a month ago for $540, and I'm sure these are the best amps for the cheapest, and also a sound investment, since they're discontinued.

:laugh2:

Sorry to hear it, Joe. That would probably be a pretty cool amp. Better luck next time.

Re: Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

I'm more amazed at the fact that you actually lost an auction... I honestly dont think in the year and a half ive been here that I've ever seen you "lose" an auction! :)

Re: Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

I thought I had this one in the bag. I was sitting here saying "save your money Joe, you don't need it" and "If I win this at a good price, it's like money I can play." Literally, that's how I look at gear. I only buy desireable pieces that I want to use, but know that I can cash out of them quickly for more.
I wanted to own this Goldtone head and use it for awhile, then list it for $1100 in a year or two. I have gear that I'll NEVER sell, then some stuff that's like playing cards.

Re: Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

Is the Goldtone THAT great? the only one I could try was a buste one at Sherman Oaks GC

The fact you want ANOTHER one makes me think hmmmmmmmmmmm
I am looking for a lightweight amp for jams. I was thinking Fender DRRI

Re: Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

I don't feel disappointed. It was just a fun idea to grab another. I do like the amps a lot. They sound like a mini plexi with Fender reverb. The one I'm really interested in grabbing is the GA-15RV, since it's less loud than mine. These amps will be sought after years from now too, so grab'em while you can.

Re: Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

The beauty of proxo bidding is that if you're disciplined, you put in what you'e willing to pay, then you back away. You don't have to worry about spending too much that way.

Re: Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

I like letting other people put their names as high bidder and sit there. Then, slam it with a proxy right at the end. Normally, if I'm willing to pay enough, I win. This time, there was a bidder who was determined to get the amp, so he set a high proxy bid with E Snipe. I wish I knew how much he proxy bid. That's one thing I wish Ebay would do....show the winner's actual bid. It's probably a good thing they don't, so they don't educate everyone.

Sniping can be fun... Try it with groundhogs one day. Great fun. Good fun on ebay as well. ;)

I was watching that auction, just for fun. The Goldtone I have now is the exact same amp. As a matter of fact, his is #46 and mine is #101.
I'm in shock at how much Joe Perry's sold for....$3827 Unbelievable! I love mine even more, now!!! LOL

Yeah - just like all of the uber-valuable Trace-Elliott Velocette amps that we all are GASing for - NOT! Which is what a Gibson Goldtone is...

But 40 second?!?!?! Jeez....might as well have been a week! COme on man - push it to the edge. When I snipe I snipe. anything more than 10 seconds and you choked!

Re: Dammit, got outbid by a sniper!

Actually, I might consider getting ahold of one of the heads although I have no real pressing need for one now nor do I have a cab to play it through.

Like GJ I think those amps will be hard to come by in the future, and expensive too. I don't think it's a TOTAL pexi sounding amp, but it's got a certain "British" feel that I truly enjoy.

The GA-15RV's I think are going to get really rare due to the pentode/triode switch on them. They're just going to have a ton of demand.

Funny...I could of driven to pick up Joe Perry's in Hanover....real natural looking tan on that guy, eh?

There's a Trace 12R going for $500 BIN:

All in all not a terrible deal. I'd have problems pulling the trigger on it, but then again I got mine for less than I probably should have.

I just realized that the Joe Perry auction ended, then another auction with the same amp is being auctioned AGAIN!!! The guy has ZERO feedback, the auction ended at $3827, and now he's got the same amp listed again! I smell a scam!

+1!!

I put exactly what I'm willing to pay and not a penny more. If I get it, then good... if someone else is willing to pay more, then they deserve it.... I dont feel sniped at all... In fact, I usually feel better... :smack: My proxy is based on a per-determined percentage of the current price of new item in auction. If it exceeds that price, it's worth it for me to spend the few extra dollars and get a new one with warranty and such...

Of course when dealing with vintage and discontinued items, things change... A LITTLE... I still only post what I'm willing to pay. If i win, cool... if not, then someone else gets it.... no worries...:smokin:
