Danelectro what a pain in the butt

I did a switch replacement on a Danelectro reissue. The harness is not user friendly. I will say once I had it wired this is a funky sounding guitar, very cool vibe. It sounds great with my Exselsior and a slide.

Re: Danelectro what a pain in the butt

This was a client axe not mine and strings were not part of the repair thank god.

Re: Danelectro what a pain in the butt

Iirc, that bridge isn't too bad. On mine, the bridge is countersunk into the body and you have to raise it out of position to get the strings out.

Totally worth it, though. Great sounding guitar.

Re: Danelectro what a pain in the butt

they are quirky to say the least. when I worked at a guitar shop we went back to the summer namm show in Nashville and picked up an order of them. I had to tell my boss......look, I will buy every one of these we cant sell-just to get him to buy an order-and we sold them all anyway but I got to play them when they came in and they really are a unique guitar. I also liked the double neck one too. It was blue but it had some cool tones you could squeeze out of it especially with a real nice fender amp or like a ceramic slide through a Marshall.

There's something about those Dana's that I like. I'd lose the electronics, however. Hate those switches.

Re: Danelectro what a pain in the butt

I had one of these, when they first re-issued them. They sound amazingly good, considering what they're made of... Poplar neck w/aluminum nut, Masonite top and back (glorified cardboard) and on the old ones, whatever wood they had lying around, stapled together to make the frame. (The reissues are all poplar at least). I really liked mine, it sounded great and never warped even with our stupid humidity changes during the year (I had a fairly expensive Gretsch at the same time, the neck warped so badly it needed to be replaced).

Re: Danelectro what a pain in the butt

Yeah, mine is brand new and crackles if you look at it and pops if you touch it. Which is a shame, because it's got three distinct and useful sounds.

Re: Danelectro what a pain in the butt

The "early" reissues (97-98 to about 00) were better built than the newest ones. I had zero electronic issues with mine. I sold it, and went to go buy another one, and the newest ones feel "cheaper" somehow than what mine felt. Loose switches and jack, buzzy ground issues, etc. I absolutely wouldn't pay the $$$$$ for a vintage one though, I bet if you told somebody in the 60s what a real vintage Dano goes for now, he'd ask for what you were smokin'.

Re: Danelectro what a pain in the butt

And probably trade a guitar for a bag of it

I had the 12-string double-cut reissue back in '98, and yeah, changing strings was definitely not fun.
