Danglamps: much vintage solid state etc.

My two amps: Probably weirder than my guitars actually.

Fender Libra, they made these for about 2 minutes in 1970. 100 watts, 4x12, Alligator Tolex, sparkly cloth, it sounds (and looks) a bit err transparent at the moment as it has no speakers :smack:

I formerly would play it through my singer's mesa cabinet, through which it actually sounded godly. PERFECT jangly, clean fender tone. Distortion? Who knows. I could turn it up to 10 and it WOULD NOT distort :laugh2:

(for distortion I'd borrow my singer's Fender... somethingorother, it was a custom shop hand wired tube head into that same mesa cab. That explains why I've never had a need for a decent pedal, haha)

The Libra has the most amazing reverb tank I've ever heard. It really is gorgeous, and I've never heard another amp or pedal that could touch it that way.

And yes, unfortunately this amp lies mostly dormant at the moment as I'm too cheap to get it the speakers it needs, though originally it ought to have come with JBLs from the logo. I acquired this when a friend bought it for $100 for just the (bronco) knobs, stripped them, and sold em for $20 each (there are ten of them lol) I got the carcass.

My only complaint: tremolo doesn't work :P

Anyway...

Jordan Trouper J1232#@$#@ somethingorother, it has a 12" speaker and is apparently 60 watts.

My uncle had this and used it for bass in the 70s (I can't IMAGINE him playing a bass through it. I've played bass through it. It's muddy as hell)

If it was originally a bass amp I don't know, but it's too muddy to actually be used as one, as a guitar amp though it passes muster slightly better and can just be considered very "warm".

Basically my uncle died and this sat in the closet til my grandma wanted more closet space, my Uncle got there in time for his Sunn Beta Lead head (:smack:), I got this. I like the sparkly cloth and aesthetics.

It's VERY sensitive to the newness of the strings on the axe used with it for some reason. No midrange control, but a very trippy tremolo effect that has a wide range.

This won't distort either.

Vaaaaalve.... vaaaaaalveeeee.... vaaaaaaaaaaaaalvee....

And a Jazzmaster is needed :D

Dude a vintage Mustang or Musicmaster/DuoSonic/whatever others are the only vintage guitars I'd ever consider. Mustangs and Jazzmasters are some of the coolest guitars EVER made even though I have no clue what music I could play on them. But I love them.

Re: Danglamps: much vintage solid state etc.

haha. I don't need anything big right now, I sold my vox modeler and will probably wind up with one of those tiny 5 watt tube things that are so fashionable nowadays (I like the retro styled 50s fender champs), or a POD and headphones.

While I like tube tones, I still think some of the best clean tones come from solid state ;) IMO solid state is decent distorted or VERY clean, but can't really do the inbetween tones that a tube thing can.

And yeah, some days I want that Jazzmaster more than others, it's NEARLY done but I wonder that I should sell it... Just because I feel guilty hogging all the great fenders :D

You can play anything with a stang/jag D

Re: Danglamps: much vintage solid state etc.

yeah man, one of those 5-watt Blackhearts or Valve Jr.s cranked up all the way for dirt, with an a/b pedal to switch between it and the clean solidstate you like...that would sound a lot better than any dirt pedal.

gotta give props to anybody who puts weird gear to good use. I always get funny looks bringing my 68 bassman to jam with metalheads but they're always blown away and second-guessing their Line 6's by the time the tubes are warmed up...

Re: Danglamps: much vintage solid state etc.

Very cool amps. I played a Fender similar to that (I think it was bigger) and didn't really dig it but I didn't give it more than 30 seconds.

My "vintage" gear:

Original 1965 Deluxe Reverb.

bassamp.jpg

1975 Traynor YBA-1 - used as a bass amp in that pic but will be modded for guitar.

Re: Danglamps: much vintage solid state etc.

Dangly, that amp is the coolest thing on the planet. Don't worry about it not being tube, or trendy, or what 99% of the people out there think of as a "good" amp. What do 99% of the people know about being Dangly, anyway. It's about what works for you.

But put some speakers in it, already. Knobs would be nice, too, even if they aren't original.

Re: Danglamps: much vintage solid state etc.

Oh now we're comparing vintage stuff eh?

68 Bassman, 80's SUNN, guitars are both 98 (weird huh..) and the tone is like 1969 but heavier.

Re: Danglamps: much vintage solid state etc.

Dangles, you got some weird stuff but, I can say I respect you for not giving a rats ass and doing your own thing to get your own sounds. At first it seemed a bit hokey with you but, now it is becoming your style and personalty. Kudo's mang.

To tell you the truth, I like solid state cleans too. I like tube cleans but, when I want a certain clean, only a solid state will do.
