Delay vs. Echo

I've heard the terms "delay" and "echo" used interchangeably and separately. What's your take? Are they the same or different? If a manufacturer claims to produce an "echo unit" or a "delay unit," is there a difference? If so, what is it?

Re: Delay vs. Echo

Best way I can describe it? When I think echo, I think slap back ala vintage 50's recording like Bep-bop alula. Delay is more versatile.

Re: Delay vs. Echo

Delay, from short to long with alot of clarity and very correct regeneration...
Echo, also short to long, more coloured repeats and more reverb like in the feedback regeneration, not as correct and blends in a more diffuse way.

Kinda like what I said... But more Intelligently.:D :laugh2:

Re: Delay vs. Echo

Lol nah I got your point in yours...but you know...somebody will probally chime in with graphs and secret blackware probes to give a real detailed picture of the huge differences:D

Re: Delay vs. Echo

To me echo is like talking into the Grand Canyon and delay is like if I were to hit a record button and set it to loop for a really short amount of time.

Re: Delay vs. Echo

I really don't think of them as being the same, unless the effect is clearly more one than the other. But an echo is a delayed reflection of sound, so they're practically synonyms. Oh well, tomAto, tomahto, let's call the whole thing off :D

I have a DMM (vintage), but I don't feel like it has the echo vibe. Anyone else feel that way, or am I doing something wrong?
