I did not want to like another powerful and loud amp, but I played several amps the other day. Ranged from a Mesa F30 head and wide-body 1X12, to a Ghia and Z28 from DR Z, Peavey and a Protube Concert Reverb and Super Reverb RI.
The Mesa head was much better than the combo. It crunched a lot better. Was it due to the bigger cab or the C90 speaker versus the V30? I don't know. The Zs were good too especially the Ghia. The Concert Reverb was was a big disappointment, while the Fender Super Reverb had some of the best cleans I have ever heard. It would not give up the dirt even with the Duncan humbuckers in my LP or with my other guitar I used, an ESP Traditional 50s style Strat. Tried a Zakk Wylde, Buddha Fatman and RI TS 808 and it got fuller, no grind.
The amp I fell in love with was the XXX 2X12 combo. I have not liked the head version, found them to hard and even a bit harsh. The combo was none of that and the crunch channel could do the blues up to Hard Rock and Metal. The Ultra is good as a lead boost and the clean channel was good, not as warm and liquid as the Super Reverb, but I could live with it.
The combo is heavy, has decent verb and it put together well. I was surprised and very impressed. Are the combo easy to sell if I decide to change down the road? My dream setup would be an A/B setup of the Super Reverb and XXX. What do you all think????
