After years of playing over the counter amps, I wanted to buy what I considered the ultimate amp. Went to a great music store, and spent probably 4-5 hours playing thru some really great amps. For me the Herbert was the ultimate. The clean channel is just spanking clean. Crystal, with a lot of spank and pop. Channel 2 has a +/- mode. (-) mode is totally Texas. Stevie Ray to mild crunch Marshall. (+) goes to way too much gain. 3:00 is about the most usable for me. I have EVH at 2:00. Channel 3 is more middy, with ridiculous gain. I can't go past 12:00 on it, and I use really low output pickups. I have pushed it to 1:00, but that's it. The presence and deep knobs can take you from super loose to super tight. My favorite part. The Bogner 101B that I played sounded great, but I wasn't able to tighten it up. The Ubershall, sounded great too, but I was unable to loosen it up. The mid cut function is really great and gets you that modern metal tone. I use it sparingly on channel 3 for modern metal tunes. I never turn the intensity past 10:00, or I can get lost in the mix. Some people use it on the clean channel. I really didn't care for the Chinese tubes it came with. They sounded good, but as they went, I replaced some pre's w/RFT's, Mullard, JJ's. The powers went to Winged -C-, or JJ's. You can mixed & match tubes, ie, 2 6L6's, 2 EL34's, & 2 6550's, etc... wich is really neat, but I prefer all EL34, or 6L6. Also, I think the best amps, sound great with all EQ knobs set at 12:00. That's how I set mine. That leaves a lot of adjustment in the EQ. Anyway, I never thought I'd spend $4K on an amp, but there is no musical environment that I could not cover with the Herbert. Very tweakable with tubes and all the knobs. I do use a Bogner cab with it though.
