Different speakers, different cabs with different amps

So, i am starting new thread here, because i have too much questions about cabs and speakers in other thread, and it's a little lame because the thread is Question for JCM 800 users. so, there should be questions and thoughts about particular amps, not cabinets and speaker combinations, modifying cabs etc.

To start out i have several speakers at home, and two 1x12 cabs, one is a combo open back 1x12 and other it is Orange PPC 112. and i have Marshall 1960 A cabinet as well. so i have tried several speakers with Blackstar HT-5 and Blackheart Handsome Devil amps. First i tried G12-75 in Orange PPC 112. the sound was awful with those two amps. than i try G12H30 in Orange PPC 112 and in Combo open back and in both the sound was just not right to my ears compared to Vintage 30. it was too harsh and it lacked something.. so i was boring after play through that, and i was missing Vintage 30. so i put Vintage 30 back in Orange PPC 1x12 cab, and G12H30 in open back Blackheart 1x12 cab.

Here i must say that... the combination of those two speakers is awesome. so i leave my 2x12 setup with those two in combination. but, suprisingly i didn't like the G12H30 alone, but in combo with Vintage 30 it sounds to me just awesome.

About new amp that coming in new year: Ceriatone JCM 800 2204. definately i will use it with Marshall 1960 A cabinet. i have done the x pattern, leave two G12T-75's in it and add two Vintage 30's. as i want to achieve heavy, thrash metal with that amp those will be definately first to try. if not, i am gonna give the G12H65's or Greenbacks try and sell others. i have already sell two G12T-75's.

For the quality of cabs: definately the Orange is the winner. wiring, wood, building and eveything is so good. the next is Blackheart, not so good as Orange but pretty close. then the Marshall. awful wiring, there are small holes in the front panel near the speakers, don't know exaclty why. but the Marshall beside the awful wiring is a pretty cool cab to.. two or three modifications (rewiring, add tolex inside and it will be all good) .

So this thread can go on, with others personal experiences on different speakers, different cabs and different amplifications.

For me, i like the Vintage 30 1x12 alone, and G12H30/Vintage 30 in 2x12 combination. but i don't like G12H30 or G12T-75 alone.

Re: Different speakers, different cabs with different amps

What your hearing is the empty mids of the G12T75 and the lesser upper mids of the G12H30. Pairing either with Vintage 30s fills in the missing mids, but with out as much nasal as using all V30s.

Yes you should upgrade the tiny stock wiring inside the 1960 cab. Use bigger speaker wire.

I always use a some kind of a beam blocker such as a piece of foam or duct tape on the inside of the grill cloth at the center of speaker on all speaker cabs. It really helps with Vintage 30s and G12-75s.

Re: Different speakers, different cabs with different amps

Well, i cannot stand the G12T-75 in 1x12 Orange Cab for 20 minutes. but i do play G12H-30 for two hours, but at the end rhythms and riffs just don't seem so good, and soloing was awfull harsh to my ears. i had to totaly increase the bass, and lower the treble at about half on amp, and still i have to close the tone controls on a guitar, even with Pearly Gates on the neck position of my Les Paul. i don't know that G12H-30 is relative new, i use it now for about month or two.. maybe need more time to settle down with those annoying hi-end frequencies ? and i notice another thing today, when i have connected open back combo with G12H-30 on the left and closed back combo with Vintage 30 on the right i think i heard more of the left speaker.. but sound definately was fuller with Vintage 30. but i heard more of the left side open back combo with that Heritage 30 speaker than the right closed cab with Vintage 30 in. The Vintage 30 is in my daily use for about one year and half. so it's kinda breaked in more than Heritage 30 i supposed to think.. am i right ?

Re: Different speakers, different cabs with different amps

It sounds like the H30 isn't broke in. It can take a long time..... Non Broke In speakers will sound a bit harsh no matter what you do.

The closed back cab will sound fuller and not as loud as an open backed cab. An open backed cab with the same sensitivity speaker has both the sound waves from the front and the back of the cone, and the cone can move farther because it doesn't have the resistance of air pressure as much as a speaker in closed back cab, both resulting more loudness.

A closed back cab prevents the sound wave from the back of the cone from coming around and mixing with the sound wave from the front of the cone and mixing slightly out of phase. This prevents loss of some bass frequencies so it sounds more full.

I know what you mean by the G12T-75 being harsh. They have a strong bass, very little mids, and razer sharp treble. The very little mids means that you notice the treble even more. If your playing a modern Marshall through G12-75s you must cut the treble way down at the amp EQ.

So...still want others' experiences, as originally planned, or happier with this turning into another "troubleshoot my rig" thread?

This thread is meant to be shared and is opened for personal experiences of all users that tried different combinations of speakers with a different amps and different cabs. my only personal doubt now is if it's better to mix the two G12H30 and two Vintage 30 in Marshall 1960 A cab or better two G12T-75's and two Vintage 30's. and which of those two combinations are better for hard rock and heavy metal music with JCM 800 2204. which one gonna sound less harsh, G12H30 or G12T-75. that's my personal doubts right now. i already post some of the stuff that i tried with two different small 5 - 15 wattage valve heads with different cabs and speakers. maybe that will help someone that had or wish to have the same setup as i. i try that thread to be usable to all the people that had their own setups or they are trying to make them and don't know really how, as i did in my Questions for JC 800 users thread. So that thread is different, it's not only my own questions, because a couple of intermediate confusions, but it's for all the people free to ask, what they don't know, and to share different opinions of their own experiences trying different equipement and building their own amplification setups. For all the guitarists. That's my answer to that. Peace.
