Dimarzio Double Whammy?

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

I remember reading that it was similar to the megadrive, which is similar to the Steves Special

It's actually heavy on the mids....whereas the Megadrive and SS are scooped.

You can still get it but you just gotta ask the dealer to special order it as it's not something they normally stock.

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

Old thread bump....

Has anyone actually tried this pickup??? I'm curious....so many pickups to try...so little time.

Can anyone compare it to other Dimarzios such as the Norton or Fred, etc.??

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

This pickup is similiar in design to the CC with a mid range spike with low bottom and highs to fatten up a trem guitar.

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

The DiMarzio FAQs say it was discontinued due to the Tone Zone and the Breed being newer doesings on the same concept.

I agree!:beerchug:

the DW was a cool pup at the time because you had no tone zones ot breeds
then.
it is a pup that has more mids than bass and treble
vinnie moore, ritchie kotzen, and a few others used these in thier ibanez guitars
to beef up the thin tone these guitars get.
I prefer the TZ,air zone or breed myself to the DW
it had very little bass and a too smooth treble
was very BOXY toned if you know what i mean

i would wager that you would not like it for long:rolleyes:
trust me it has a very smooth tone that makes you YELL out load
"I NEED MORE SCREAM and CRUNCH":laugh2:

the DW would make for a great alan holdsworth tone though!

Hey bro I'm not getting one, lol. just wanted to point out that they are still availible for those who didn't know.

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

I had one for a couple of years. It is twice as powerfull as a paf pro with a fat midrange and bass. It is less powerfull than a megadrive with more midrange and with less of the cool high end of the megadrive and paf pro. I though that the double whammy was the perfect Jake E Lee pickup. Its sound fit perfectly with Bandlands and Bark At The Moon. I settled with the Megadrive. It is better with brighter woods.

Sounds VERY cool IMO. How tight was the bottom end?

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

I tried it in only one guitar which is pretty dark, quiet and mellow. Swap ash body, rosewood fretboard. I think that brighter body woods would probably sound better with it. It was a bit dark and murky in that guitar although you could probably remedy the mud by cutting off the screw poles flush with the bottom of the pickup.

PAF pro= 300MV
DW= 330mv

30 mv more is NOTHING in the real world

the DW is only slightly hotter than the pros
and very little bass

bro i think you had a different dimarzio!

dimarzio listed it on thier site as a bass of 7?? WTF?????
bulls#@T!
i have several older dimarzio catalogs with the DW in them and the bass is at 4 and i agree with that.

The Double Whammy (DP150) is intended for use in the bridge position. We still make it on request in all colors and both spacings, but we no longer list it in our catalog because the Tone Zone® and the Breed™ bridge model are newer designs with the same purpose.
Specs are: DC resistance 15.90Kohms,
output 330mv,
treble 5,
mid 8.5,
bass 7(this is a typo by DMZ it should be 4!:)

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

Powerfull is a relative term. It wasn't meant to be a statement of absolute output in millivolts. If you put a paf pro and a double whammy side by side your going to say the double whammy is more powerfull because of how thick the sound is. It gives you the impression that it has a lot more ouput.

It also might appear more powerful due to the fact that much of the output is most likely contained in a narrower frequency range(mids) unlike the PAF Pro which is very balanced across the spectrum.

Re: Dimarzio Double Whammy?

I'm contemplating between this pickup, a Megadrive, Custom, and Super3 for my guitar....not sure which yet:(
