DiMarzio Evolution

what abaout the breed, will it pass as a good overall vai tone for most his songs?
in the bridge that is

Yes. But it is like a dark PAF. The treble frequencies are darker, but the actual sound is very PAF like. I put one in one of my Jackson's, a DK2, and it tamed the treble issue I had. It is very smooth, kinda reminds me of an Invader that was smoothed a bit.

Don't let the output of the Breed bother you, it is hot, just not as hot as the Tone Zone or EVO. On that note, the EVO II is said to take off a little of that upper mid spike of the original EVO.

Re: DiMarzio Evolution

Madguitar,

You have purchased the EVO correct?

Try this, and I am not being fresh here. Install the EVO, if you like it great. If you don't, come back and tell us what direction you would like to go.

That seems a bit strange, since it was designed for a JEM. ;)

Correct.

But I hate the "intended tone", and love the "accidental" tone you get out of it when you put it in a stop-tail, or even a vintage trem.

The Breed and Tone Zone are waay louder than an EVO in terms of output (16k compared to 13k), but the EVO definitely sounds "hotter", due to it's EQ shape.

Hmmm...I don't know about this. The Evo is definitely louder to my ears than those two. Also, don't go by the DC Resistance....that's not an output indicator....it's meaningless really in terms of output. The Breed and TZ have higher DC's but also are A5 whereas the Evolution is ceramic.

The millivolt readings really tell the story:

Evolution 404mV
Tone Zone 375mV
Breed 356mV

But you are partially right about some pickups sounding hotter because of their EQ shape.....if a pickup puts out much of it's output in a small range of frequencies it can sound louder in some cases...however, I just don't think that's the case here necessarily.

Re: DiMarzio Evolution

So breeds sound better than evos in a standard basswood RG, but Evos are better in Les Paul kind of guitar. If I could handle the brightness of the dimebucker in basswood, could I handle an evo in basswood?

Re: DiMarzio Evolution

I had the Evo in my RG... it was very tight and aggressive. like MOST Dimarzio's i've tried, it's very articulate. you will hear every note, whether you're tapping, sliding, sweep picking or doing legato runs. i also noticed that unlike the steve's special and paf pro it doesn't produce that "awwww" vowel sound effect... it does the opposite (unless played with a wah). the harmonics ring out very loud, like it says on the Dimarzio website. the Evo was made for that type of playing anyway... shred, shred and shred. i found the clean tone however very thin and "plucky". its a very modern sounding pickup, nothing "vintagey" about this one.

the breed to me sounds like a hotter, crunchier paf pro with boosted mids and low end. same presence, cut and clarity.... just higher output i guess.

Re: DiMarzio Evolution

i havent purshased the EVO..YET TO DECIDE.
tried one in a strat(not mine)years ago and while it sucked with a blue voodoo,it roared with a jcm 900 dual reverb combo.like a lion really.
oh and it was a neck evo,in the bridge.

Re: DiMarzio Evolution

Destructone, I didnt think evo would not have that aww sound, but the SS would when I looked at the tone chart. About 9 months I tried a Jem through a JCM 2000 and I dont remeber the harsh, thin tone everyone says the evos have, but I can hardly rember the tone so I may be wrong. Hopefully I'll be ordering the pups soon and Ill give my review.

Re: DiMarzio Evolution

I own two Axis guitars (the Tone Zone Custom) and a hardtail w/ an Evo. The other two pickups push more air, period. Lots more.

The Evo, however, is tighter, harder, narrower, and definitely more "present".

That millivolt shtick you posted is from DiMarzio's website. You don't see it on any other professional website, including BareKnuckle, Fralin, etc.
