This is a good thing...it's about time. I know why the PC1 sounds SO MUCH THICKER than their other guitars....it's not just the wood...it's moreso the pickup(Super3). A buddy of mine swapped the JB from my SL1 with his Super3 in his PC1 because he thought he *had* to have the JB....well long story short he was begging me for the Super3 back and I told him I was not yanking it out of my SL1:)

That's not to say that JBs always sound thin....depends on the guitar...just the Super3 is a MUCH better match for the bright Jacksons IMO.

hey man, stop it with the "JB=thin" cliche before somebody starts to brag about the Custom!

Nah....it's not always thin....just in the USA Jacksons. It sounded much bigger and better in my cheapo alder bodied/maple neck/rosewood fingerboard Kramer.....it sounded like it was *made* for that guitar. I actually love the JB...just in the right guitar:)

While I am a Dimarzio fan, I gotta disagree with you here. The PC sounds thick because it's the PC, that guitar is unlike any other IMHO (and I've got 3 of them). I've had a Super 3, JB, Air Zone, Full Shred, Gibson 498, and Evo 2 in there. I'll agree the JB wasn't a good match, but to me the best of the lot was the Evo 2, which is a fairly bright pickup (and no, I'm not treble-deaf... )

That guitar IS thicker....but it's not all due to the wood...MUCH of that CAN be attributed to the pickup....at least 50% from what the owner said.

Why I don't buy Dimarzios.

Tradmark of the letters PAF

Trademark of the Double Creme Bobbin

Trademark of Mirror finish

Notice these are all trademarks, trademarks do NOT expire, patents do.

The trademarking of the letters PAF, and the double creme bobbins is intellectual property theft. Gibson did it first.

What that is essentially saying is we are TOO DUMB to know a Duncan from a Dimarzio without the double creme bobbins, or now the mirror finish bobbins.

Mirror finish is not new BTW, Rio Grande was offering that a few years back, I translate this to MORE intellectual property theft.

On a side not I was listening to Satch's Live in San Francisco, it made me think, hmmm PAF pro, PAF Joe? Then I remembered the trademark nonsense.

Luke

This is a late response to this but I have seen this reasoning too many times before of people getting caught up in the political arena of who stoled what from who. In my humble opinion, if you are not a owner of stock in any of these companies, if you aren't the owner of any of the mentioned companies, WHO REALLY CARES????? Come on, isn't it suppose to be about tone?? These companies have given us guitar players options as to getting the tone of our dreams. Use them for just that.

I'm really sorry guys, but I really don't see all the hoopla about who has a patent crap. If it meant that much to Gibson, maybe they should have filed the patent, meanwhile I just want Duncan, Dimarzio, Rio Grande and the others to continue to make pickups to help me get to where I'm going tonewise.

Well, considering that you picked the JEM over the Soloist, I think it's safe to say that your credibility for any matter has gone down the toilet. :flush: :18:

by the way, I stumbled upon Troy Stetina's website and here's what he had to say about an Ibanez JEM over a Jackson Soloist:

"My Jackson was soooooo ugly, in fact, that my wife Joan finally had enough and went out and bought me a brand new Steve Vai Jem7 Ibanez. Nice of her don't you think? Well, this guitar is awesome! I play it most of the time these days. Some purists object to the bolt on neck. Makes no difference to me. The thing looks great, sounds great. The strings are slightly wider spaced than the Jacksons. Also, it takes a little getting used to in the picking position... a bit more like a strat in that the neck is pretty much flush with the pickguard. But I've adapted. I like the frets better. Easier to play smooth legato lines it seems to me."

how's THAT for credibility?!

now, can I hear an AMEN!?:beerchug:

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

I don't know about questionable business practices, but in my experience, I haven't played through one single dimarzio that sounds good...

We're all friends here. Let's keep this about why people hate Dimarzios and why people love them.

ok consider this:

you discover a small company that makes the best sounding pickups you've ever heard, that make anything else on the market sound feeble in comparison. they happen to make a pickup that has 2 cream coloured bobbins, because a lot of people want them to look like that. dimarzio find out, and they use this trademark which has no legal standing that was granted to them to take this small pickup company to court.

even though the small pickup company wins the case and dimarzios trademark is discredited, dimarzio continue to drag this company through the court, because they can afford to. they use their financial position to abuse the legal system. now, the small pickup company goes out of business because they can't afford to keep up with the legal costs.

consequently, you can't get these amazing pickups anymore - the owner of the business is bankrupt and has packed in making pickups. now can you see how it affects the guitar player?

you might not want to walk into a shop and buy Duncans with double creme bobbins, but some people would - and if the legal system worked properly they SHOULD be able to. so you don't want double creme bobbins or mirror bobbins on your Duncans, but what if this was the case with the colours YOU wanted - I bet you'd care then wouldn't you? Heck, Dimarzio would even trademark ALL pickups given half the chance...

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

Let's just wait until someone trademarks the words 'pickups', 'ceramic', 'magnet' and 'polepieces'.

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

I recently bought two Dim pups.
2052Scott_11-09-05_019_Small.jpg

Here they are installed in my Hamer Archtop. I held out for a long time on buying Dim pups. I didn't buy from them due to their dubious practices, but I couldn't ignore all the rave reviews of these two pickups. The neck pickup in particular has to be one of the best sounding pickups I've ever heard. The bridge is good too, but it's not different enough from the neck to warrant keeping it. I'll have to trade it in for more variety. These pups are the VVPAF neck and the VHPAF bridge.

Call me weak or whatever you want, but I have to say that I love the VVPAF.

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

if there was a dimarzio pickup i liked, i'd look buy it second hand so dimarzio didn't benefit from the sale

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

It's about "tone" for me...I really, really like SD as a company and I understand the loyalty of the fan base...they are good people and have given us a fine forum to blather on about silly stuff like magnets, winds, guitars and amps (Thanks SD!)......And, I don't like DiMarzio's "trademark" on double cremes and PAF naming BS, but ultimately, I don't give a crap about who can use what color or what name...if I want double cremes or I want a sound that DiMarzio delivers...or Gibson...or Bare Knuckles or whomever..thats where I go, though def I've owned more Duncans over the years

Right now, I'm absolutely HATING the 59s in my Hamer  ...they don't deliver tone-wise in this axe....so DiMarzios are going in (SuperD in the bridge and either a PAF or Air Classic for the neck)...if they don't work, then I'll try a Custom and an A2 pro or something...it's all about the tone.

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

if I was after double creme's, I'd just get Bareknuckle pickups. I assume they can sell them because DiMarzio wouldn't be able to abuse the british legal system if they tried to sue them.

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

While I use both Duncan and DiMarzio, I will agree with those that think that DiMarzio's rep can be a bit rude on the phone.

Re: DiMarzio Haters - Why?

Heal the world.

Resist Dimarzio hate. :)

Make it a better place...

for you and for me, and the entire human race.

Are you one of the companies I listed?? Oh wait, you are only 17?? You weren't even born then. Bro, I say this with a very warm heart....take a pill, you are allowing something that you can't do anything about get in the way of your search for tone. Don't let it be a determining factor for you. :)
